1996 Taurus LX 3.0 duratech 24 valve V6
Blower motor burned out about a week ago (not sure if it's related in any way) but, my engine now races at idle between 2 and 3000 rpms then either dies immediately or idles roughly for a few moments then dies. I DO NOT think it is the O2 sensor. If anything it's the mass airflow sensor or some massive vacuum leak. Also the intake manifold is solid. It also seems that I do not have any vacuum anywhere on the top side of my engine. The throttle body is clean. Although this particular model can have the idle adjusted I don't think it will do any good(how would that cause the engine to race?)My ex had a 94 that did the exact same thing and I've heard this story elsewhere several times. SOMEBODY must know exactly what the problem is. If you can help me with this problem I would be forever grateful, as a single father with a 5 & 6 yr old my funds are rather limited. I can't afford to play hit and miss. As I said,if you can help, I'm in your debt. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum!
Have you tried pulling the OBD-II diagnostic codes? Just because you haven't seen the light come on does not necessarily mean there are not pending codes. It would be worth a shot. Also, you may try unplugging the Idle Air Control (IAC) solenoid to see if that has any effect. It will probably set a diagnostic code though, so get the codes read before unplugging things. ![]() Also, check the EGR valve for build up and a stuck valve. -Rod |
