Windstar Electrical Ghost in the Machine

2000 Windstar LX 3.8, new alternator & battery. Now the head & tail lights won't shut off, EFI sometimes won't start, all the indicator lights & seatbelt warning stay on, gas gauge won't register, door locks make a slight clicking sound but don't move. Ya know, back in the late 60s we wouldn't have this problem-of course my internet was slower.

Re: Windstar Electrical Ghost in the Machine

Your model, like mine, is loaded with relays. Pull them one at a time and notice the response. In particular, take note of the PCM power relay, and the four SSP (sytem switching power) relays. You can find their location by reading the glove box manual. (While you have the relays pulled ... take the chance to lubricate the bases.)

Other than relays, you may have a chaffed harness. You'll have to remove the windschield cowling to look it over properly.

Good luck!

Re: Windstar Electrical Ghost in the Machine

In the past my 99 has exhibited the symptom of the headlights coming on when the ignition is turned off. That problem turned out to be a fuse on the driver side panel under the dash.

Yep, I should have added: "check all fuses".

The fuses have unique/peculiar groups of loads ... and when that group suddenly fails, it suggests which fuse has opened.

Re: Windstar Electrical Ghost in the Machine

Double check your battery voltage, engine off and engine on. Could be your new alternator is a dud.
