Amp Problem

I recently installed my old amp and sub from my 89 camaro to my 99 blazer. when i start turn the volume past a certian point (depending if theres alot of bass) the amps light goes from blue to red and at the same time i can see my battery gauge goes up and down beacause of the power that is being pulled. I know that this is one of those saftey features preventing me from blowing up my amp.

I have have my ground conneted to a bolt from the back seat. the bolt comes from the frame threw the sheet metal the holds the seat.

I heard of the big 3 what is it? and can this help my amp issue? Also if i get a used H O alternator how would i know that its the right one?

Re: Amp Problem

it may be that you just have the gains (sensitivity) on the amp set wrong and it's just maxing out just below the point where it starts cutting out. The big 3 is where you add 3 wires of a large guage (small number) - alternator to battery +, battery gnd to engine, and battery gnd to frame. I also do one from the engine block to the frame. It allows the current to flow a little more freely. As far as a used alt, you will either have to know what you're doing or trust someone at the salvage yard.

Re: Amp Problem

No I turn them all the way down and still it does the same thing. I don't know that if a capacitor would help my problem. The battery gauge drops a lot when the bass hits then once it passes 11 volts the amp goes into safety mode.

Re: Amp Problem

a cap will NOT help this problem, sounds like you have a weak alt or just too much power for it. How much power are you running ?

Re: Amp Problem

Your amp is going into under-volt protection. Is this problem happening if you have just the key on in accessory mode, or is the engine actually running? If the engine isn't running when this happens, then you can expect a high power draw to drop voltage below 11v, and thus throwing the amp into undervolt protection. If the engine is running, then you should have roughly 14v coming off the alternator and you shouldn't see voltage drop below 13v, UNLESS you are using a very high powered system that your alternator cannot handled, OR your alternator/battery is dying.
