Power Break Booster install, help!??!
HEllo there everyone...
Well, I'm brand spankin' new to these forums and I'm already in dire need of help! To start, I really don't know much about cars at all, however I do have my trusty father here to help me when it gets down and dirty. Even though I'm no auto enthusiast, I can tell when something is seriously wrong with my car. This became abundantly clear the other day when I noticed my breaks going completely out of whack! After doing some initial research, my father found out what part it is that needs to be replaced. We hopefully (crosses fingers) will be able to locate the correct part tomorrow over at Kragen... so we already know what it is exactly (i.e. part # and whatnot) that we need to get. From what my father already gathered over at Kragen Autoparts, this fix shouldn't be too hard to knock out. However, we do need some help and guidance from this website... help in the form of clear and concise directions. So, can anyone here help me with, or direct me to, a detailed step-by-step process (online or otherwise) wherein I (we) can learn how to replace a faulty Power Break Booster in my 97' Chevy S-10??? Once we have it laid out in front of us, my father said that he's pretty confident that he can get the rest done himself. Any help or advice at all that any of you guys here can give would be GREATLY appreciated 10x's over!!!!! I'm sure all of you know the sort of predicament that this type of situation often times puts people in... do I let a "pro" do it and possibly risk getting ripped off and in the process empty my bank account, or do I try and do it myself on my own terms and save a %&!@-load of money??? Although sometimes the obvious answer isn't always the easiest! So again, thanx in advance for any help you guys give out!! |

Re: Power Break Booster install, help!??!
First step is to make sure it is bad.
What is it doing or not doing? First step in replacing brake booster is to unbolt master cylinder and lay it over to the side. Do not remove brake lines from master cylinder. Next step is to go under dash and unclip or unpin or unbolt brake pedal rod from brake pedal . Next step is to look under dash on firewall and find the 4-6 bolts and nuts holding the booster to fire wall. Remove the nuts. Then go under hood and make sure you unplug the vacuum line from booster. Then pull out the brake booster and stick the new on back on the firewall. Then bolt it all back up making sure you get the brake pedal rod hooked back on and clipped or pined on and and check brake and cruise stop light switches for proper adjustment and operation. Thes brake pedal for good brakes before putting it in gear. If you run into problems or need help. A all data online sub will give all repair info on it. http://www.alldata.com/products/diy/index.html Good Luck MT

^^^
Thanx for the speedy reply! And I do apologyse about posting 2 threads... there was what seemed like some mojar website technical issues last night after I attempted to post the first time. I didn't see my thread successfuly posted anywhere, so I tried it again without any luck. However now it looks like it did go through after all. Anyways, we do know for a fact that the part is faulty in some way, and it does need replaced. I noticed that while I was driving, I needed to press down extremely hard on the break pedal in order to stop. We're not 100% sure that the part needs a simple replacement... the employee over at Kragen could be "pulling my leg" slightly... but I'm pretty sure my father wants to do it anyways. The S-10 does have over 100K on it. So, we'll get going on ordering this part, and I'll keep you all posted on the progress. Thanx again so much for the help and or advice!!! |

Re: Power Break Booster install, help!??!
Good luck.
But I would make sure it is bad before replacing. Hard pedal points to lose of vacuum some place. Can you hear vacuum leakage? Could be booster or lose of vacuum to it. Have you checked the engine vacuum and vacuum hose and check valve to it? No problem on double post. Yes the forum is acting up some. And thanks for posting back. Let us know how it goes. MT
