Metro Fuel Tank Capacity

According to the owner's manual, my 1985 Metro has a 10.6 US gal (or 40 litre) tank capacity. Has anyone figured out how low the volume can go before you run into problems with possibly starving the fuel pump? When my gauge hits the red zone, it's close to the thirty litre mark, but that extra 5 - 8 litres left can make a big difference in total range, but, I don't want any surprises, either. Any ideas?

Re: Metro Fuel Tank Capacity

when your needle first hits the red zone (and stays there...not a bounce), you have appx 2 US gal. left. I ran it once to where I pumped a 9.8 US gal. fill-up, & didm't have any problems

Re: Metro Fuel Tank Capacity

Tank is 10.6 gallons (40 litres), filler neck holds 3/4 gallon or so. I've put in 11 gallons a couple of times and 11.2 once. Here's some links to my mouthing off on this subject on TeamSwift.

Nice (although huge) picture of my gas gauge WAY below empty with about a gallon left:

Recommendations on how to go about learning how far you can go:

Re: Metro Fuel Tank Capacity

With extremely high gas prices straining consumers pockets in recent months, it is only natural for people to wonder where all the money they pay at the pump goes..

Re: Metro Fuel Tank Capacity

Thanks for the info, guys. Good picture, Woodie. Never would have dreamed of taking the gauge that low. I've seen a lot of smoked pumps from being run dry, mostly Fords, and have been very leery of taking the level that low. Thanks again.

Re: Metro Fuel Tank Capacity

Yeah, I hear that a lot, but don't think it applies to Suzukis. I run mine until it coughs and fill it up until it runs down the side. When you're filling up three times a week, you try to get as much as possible. Over 650K miles in Metros, with over 200K on the first, never had a fuel system problem of any kind.
