94 Pont.Transport Charging
New (not rebuilt) alternater new battery, new starter. Having problem charging. I have changed the computer several times and problem goes away for a few months, then returns. I now don't believe comp is problem but don't know where to look. Also have replaced ignition switch. Exciter wire shows no voltage with key on. Is it possible that while moving wires from comp and or alt that I made a connection.

Re: 94 Pont.Transport Charging
THere has been another case recently here with the exciter not going HOT with the key on. THis is a direct connection...so check wiring and ignition switch itself. WIll the dash voltmeter indicate voltage? Computer is not involved in the charging circuit. Which engine?

Re: 94 Pont.Transport Charging
I think I found the problem. When I changed computers, I moved some wires and that may have caused a wire to either connect or disconnect. Found out after changing serpentine belt and moving alternater. Charged for a while and then started discharging. I played with the wires that went into the alternator plug and by wiggling them I could get it to charge or discharge. In process of finding alt. plug but on Sunday ? Thanks for your reply and will post results after I try new plug, oh and I did buy a new ignition switch which did'nt help. So far it was an expensive ordeal but cheaper than going to a dealer.

Re: 94 Pont.Transport Charging
Bought new plug for alt. It's the plug that connects to voltage reg.on alt. Problem seems to have gone away. It's the last place I would have looked and if car did'nt break down I may have never found problem. Only reason I went for the computer was that I traced exciter wire to a junction block and from there the wire went to the computer. Moving wires while having a voltage meter connected and engine running is a sure way of tracing bad connecions. Hope my stupidity can help someone else avoid what I went through. Motor is a 3.8.
