More Geo body damage questions

Im trying to get my Geo Metro I bought from my cousin for $150 in acceptable shape to run and have found some body damage I am not sure what to do with. First the door latch is missing a screw which I got a replacement for, but there' s nothing to screw it into as you can see in the photo. What do I need to do there?

Next under the hood there's damage where he hit something, I don't know what but its got the whole works there bent back. And this on the bottom part of the car. What and how do I repair/replace? Thank you much.

Sorry for the screw up. I went to a different media hosting web site and all went very easy.

Re: More Geo body damage questions

I've never taken the door strike off to look at the fastener, but since yours is already loose, I would loosen it and see what that hole is really supposed to look like.

There has got to be some sort of captive fastener that is missing. It's probably fallen into the door cavity. I can't believe it would be as simple as one of those square plastic inserts (how could it be strong enough?), but it might be. If it's fallen into the cavity, you should be able to retrieve it at the bottom of the door.

Be careful with the plastic sheet on the door- that's your waterproofing and dust treatment. If you rip or damage it, you will need to tape it up or replace it with very thick plastic.

Let us know what you find!

Re: More Geo body damage questions

If it was my car, I would just weld the striker right in place where the marks are and forget it.

The front upper and lower core support can be straightened with a chain and a tree! Seriously, if you know what you are doing, you can carefully use a chain wrapped at the bend and then tie the chain to a tree. Have an assistant watch the metal bend and stop you while you back up slowly and carefully. Or even back up till the chain is tight and then giv it a tug.

Good luck.

Re: More Geo body damage questions

That striker plate has a plate on the inside of the rear quarter pannel that is held in place by a sheetmetal housing. It is made to float around a bit so you can move the striker around to where it works the best. My guess is that that plate got twisted and turned sideways and the hole is no longer visable. You can try sticking a piece of wire inside that hole and maybe fishing it up to the top . If that doesn't work pull the plastic side pannel that goes next to the seat and you should be able to see what happened. My guess is that that part that holds the inside plate has rusted out. I've got a picture of that from the inside of the quarter pannel but can't seem to get anything to load on this site so if you pm me your e-mail i can send it to ya, Ken.
