Weird Stuff Happening 2000 Intrigue

My girlfriend was driving home today, when suddenly all of the lights on her instrument panel cut on then cut off, after that all the gauges dropped, this sequence occurred three times, then the vehicle completely cut off. Fortunately, this happened right around the corner from home, so she was able to get it to the house. Now, when she turns the key, everything lights up and the gauges go all the way up, the engine tries to start, then everything cuts off. Any theories as to what may be the problem?

Sounds pretty typical of the ignition switch. Some, myself included, have had luck by cleaning the external contacts on it, some even go as far as to take it apart and clean up things on the inside.

Heres instructions on how to remove it if your interested, cant really hurt anything, just takes some of your time.

Before you tear into that, you should also check your battery cables to make sure they are free of corrosion, pull back the boot portion as well.

Check and make sure the battery is fully charged. It might be the alternator starting to go. But since things are still working in the car it prob is the ignition switch.
