Transmission Question

I recently purchased a 2005 Lincoln LS V8 with the 5-speed transmissin. This is my first LS and only Ford transmission I'm even remotely familiar with is the one in the Town car/crown vic/marquis.

This car has had a solenoid replaced on it, but it still has a wierd shift from 1-2 and 2-3 upshifting - and occasionally on 3-4. the dealer says they find nothing else wrong after replacing solenoid on trans (btw car has 31k on it), but also when i put the car in reverse or D5 it has a tendency to seem to have a slight surge or lunge if you don't have your foot firmly on the brake pedal.

I'm not sure if the shift pattern is normal for these cars since i previously only owned GM cars but i've driven my parents grand marquis and they don't shift the same as this one. Kinda makes me sick i paid this money for this car and thinking it has a tranny prob...

Any thoughts as to its "normal" to have a unique shift that seems to be more jerky in changing than others or could i have a problem here?

appreciate your help - other than that - guess its an OK car - just taking me a long time to get adjusted to it....had it 2 weeks now and i'm still not fond of it..

Can you describe the "unique shift" a bit more? I'm not sure if you're saying it's jerky shifting from 1-2 and 2-3 or if that's only when shifting to reverse.

My wife's 2002 V6 has a butter smooth shift from one forward gear to the next, upshift or downshift. But it does engage reverse quite abruptly. She's put around 20k miles on it and there's been no change in the way it shifts.

I had a 2004 V8 and it shifted very smoothly in forward gears as well as when engaging reverse. I had around 47k on my 2004 when I traded it in but, other than a new solenoid pack under warranty, never had any transmission shifting issues in the time I owned it. The solenoids had to be replaced because sporatically it would not engage reverse.

I'm not the best at describing things. when you put it in Reverse or Drive (D5 or D4), it's not a smooth transition into gear. The solenoid was supposed to have changed that but didn't.

The upshift and downshift are almost like a transmission that seems to be slipping - but the ford place keeps telling me "its normal" which it can't be normal - cars with automatic trannys i've ever driven always chagne almost without notice. I can use the manual or SST side and shift it smoother than it will shift on its own. So i feel theres a problem in there.

These idiots drove my car 50 miles the other day and came back telling me nothing was wrong...50 miles on the highway. I've already called ford motor company and told the rep that the vehicle has only 30k on it, and the guy told me to keep taking it in regardless til they fix it. But these guys keep saying "nothing is wrong"

EDIT: the reason they installed a solenoid was the car wouldnt go into 1st gear and it had that hard jerk into R.

Abrupt shifts and slipping are very different. In fact, slipping is what allows a smooth shift. If there is no slipping, you'll get a very harsh shift.

On a sample of two LS's, one V6 and one V8, the shifts in forward gears are virtually unnoticeable from a "feel" standpoint.

i'm actually wondering if Ford tranny's are just rougher than i'm used to, comparing them to GM 4T65E's...but to me since theres no dipstick to check the fluids i dont know how to convince the guys to drop the pan and have them go over the trans to make sure there "is" no problem....otherwise i'll always feel i have a faulty trans in this lincoln

You can check the used car lots for other LSs and see if they shift the same during test drives. The same auto is used in both the V6 and V8.

You could also request the dealership check the transmission firmware version and see how that compares with the latest firmware. Or ask them to justify why it's normal, then ask how many other LSs they've driven.

where i bought this one they have a LS-v6 model. i was going to ask the dude that on Wed but he disappeared really quick. I've even tried talking to them about trading it in on a different car but they won't talk - as if they don't want this car back.... I'm wondering if they know it has a problem and are trying to hide from it...

Could be more talks to Ford but my summer vacation is ending in 2 weeks and the problem has to get taken care of quick...because I need reliable transportation.

Based on the forum guidelines that you presumably read before registering on this site, I wonder how long before you are contacted regarding your choice of username.

Your symptoms sound similar to what I experienced that was fixed by a replacement solenoid pack.

never did. Took it to 5 different Lincoln dealers and 1 Ford dealer. The guys would tell me that the problem "definately exists" but in their words, "we just can't pinpoint it"

finally after talking with the lady at Ford Motor Company til I was blue in the face, and she was supposed to be a high level support tech at Ford Motor Company - she said just drive it until it quits, but make sure you're at least 10 miles from a reputable Ford dealership, otherwise you'll have to pay towing after the first 10-15 miles.

Was highly peaved at Ford, to say the least. The car left me on the road numerous times not going into gear without having someone getting behind it and literally pushing it as I would lightly give it gas while in gear - it would jerk visciously and go into gear.

To me, that should tell me Ford should have replaced the tranny - but they refused until it completely was beyond going....

Just traded the car off - cost me bucks - but its gone - which I'm somewhat glad after all those problems. I like the LS but would never buy another one after the experince with Ford's warranty department and their Customer Service department - and Field Reps who don't seem to stand behind their vehicles.
