Unhappy AC Rattler

I have a 99 Montana with a rattler in the AC..

AC works great, however, when I turn it off the compressor rattles, actually sounds like steel scraping steel.

Is there a way to rebuild the clutch in the AC without removing it? Or is it repairable at all?

Thanks
Paul

I have seen this problem many times on various GM vehicles especially ones with V5 compressors. I believe you can buy A/C hub & clutch separately but I can't recall if the compressor needs to be removed on this particular vehicle to replace it. You will need an A/C compressor puller/installer tool to properly remove and install the hub without damaging it. Another option is to go with new or reman compressor (preferably AC Delco) but this could get pretty expensive. Question, have you ever had to replace the A/C condenser on your Montana?

Re: AC Rattler

Yes it is V-5 classic clutch drive drag-- need to borrow clutch remover from autozine and pull clutxh out to .020" air gap-- very very common on v-5 compressors

Nope. It's always worked great.

So what r u saying? Just increase the gap to .020" and it all better?

Re: AC Rattler

yes- I do them in the parking lot at work- anyone who has a V-5 compressor will need it done sooner or later. Replacing the compressor fixes it also- but who need to pay $600 for a free fix?

Re: AC Rattler

yeah the clutch is too close to the pulley and is still hitting after you turn a/c off. increasing the gap on the clutch plate will solve this. some autostores such as autozone will loan the clutch tool set and it only takes ten minutes to get a twenty mill gap between the clutch plate and pulley.you can do this without removing the compressor.
