98 Lumina Will Not Start
I will try to describe the problem--it started when I shut off the engine in Neutral and attempted to restart, will click, click, click like it is a poor battery connection or a bad starter. I have switched the starter, checked the battery, unhooked and tried another battery and changed the neutral control switch, it still does the same thing. I feel like it has to be a switch or something about the security, or something simple, but I cannot figure it out. I live 40 miles from the nearest repair shop, so do not want to have it towed if I can avoid it. Also bought a OBD scanner and it showing no codes. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 98 Lumina Will Not Start
Welcome to AF. Make sure the ground and positive cables at the junction and the battery are clean and not corroded up in the cables. I assume the clicking is the starter solenoid trying to engage, correct?

Re: 98 Lumina Will Not Start
I have checked the battery, seems to be fine. I am assuming that it is the solonoid that is clicking. This problem started suddenly, when I shut off the engine in neutral and attempted to restart

Re: 98 Lumina Will Not Start
Seems fine? Did you load test the battery, do the headlites dim when trying to crank the engine, what do the battery volts drop to on cranking?

Re: 98 Lumina Will Not Start
If everything is good at the battery connections cleaned and tight. Anti freeze is a good insulator if you spilled some clean the engine ground and the connection at the starter. As Max Wedge said you need 11 volt on the battery with somebody trying to start. Low voltage buy a new battery.

Re: 98 Lumina Will Not Start
I have tried a different battery, taken the battery completely loose and attached to a different one, still the same problem, just a clicking noise when you attempt to start, it is 12.92 at battery and 12.90 at starter, not when I try to start since I have no one here to check it then.

Re: 98 Lumina Will Not Start
The suggested checks are required to solve your issue, sorry.

Re: 98 Lumina Will Not Start
Max Wedge is correct surely you have a friend who can try to start it while you check the battery voltage. They also make an amp meter which you just hold on the starter cable to check the amps being drawn. You may have a bad starter. Testing is cheaper than parts.
