98 SL A/C not cold anymore
What's the proper procedure for refilling the refrigerant in the AC and how can I tell if the pump is screwed up? I got to messing with some R134a even though the AC already worked (DUH) and now the AC wont put out any cold air. AC clutch is engaging and rad cooling fan turns on the sec the AC is turned on ..... basically everything is doing what it's supposed to be doing except putting out cold air.

Re: 98 SL A/C not cold anymore
You say you were messing with R134A when the A/C was working? Does that mean you filled it even though it didn't need it? You may have overcharged the system. You need to get a set of guages and measure the pressure in the system.

. The can had a gauge with it and I kept it in the pressure range I was supposed to and it continued to work for about a week after but now it doesn't. I feel like an idiot already so please don't ask me why I did it, I just hope I don't have a major AC repair bill due to me trying to fix something that wasn't broke in the first place. Please excuse me while I find some corner to hide in.

Re: 98 SL A/C not cold anymore
Oh and just so you know, I used a partial can (near empty) of R134a that I had used on another car ....that did need it so don't think I dumped a full can of R134a in. None the less I still feel like an idiot.

............tisk tisk :P
What does the guage say the pressure is at now? Should be at "Normal" with the a/c on HIGH. My honest suggestion....pay the money...have it discharged and then recharged as i have a feeling you let air into the system or over charged it.

A/C should really only be handled by properly trained people. Take it in and have it fixed.

Re: 98 SL A/C not cold anymore
It would probably be beneficial to you to take the car to a shop. Just make sure they have the right equipment for the A/C. They will hook it up to a recycler that will drain the fluid, recycle it, check for leaks, and refill with new R134. Car is 10 years old so it certainly would not hurt to have done. Also I don't think most places will charge you a huge amount of money!

Re: 98 SL A/C not cold anymore
Gauge was reading 35lbs with AC on high after I got done "playing" with it. Taking it to someone who actually knows what they're doing with AC sounds like the plan.
