Front end sound

I have a 99 Grand Am and have owned it for several years, whenever I go over a bump theres a sound from the front end like a loose piece of sheet metal banging against something. I push up and down on the front end when I stop but can't make the noise repeat but ever bump in the road I hit I hear that sound. Any Ideas?

Re: Front end sound

Welcome to AF!

This was a typical issue with the 99 Grand Am. You may want to check the front struts to make sure they are tight but you may end up replacing the strut mounts to get it to go away although that may not actually correct the problem. You may, unfortunately, have to live with the issue.

Along the same lines you may want to check the entire front end for something that is loose or worn. Sometimes, control arm bushings can cause similar issues but my guess would be the struts.

Re: Front end sound

Currently my girlfriend has a front in noise that is generating the same type of sound in her 2001 Grand AM.
However it almost sounds like a cable is loose and vibrating within the engine compartment.
I took a stab and secured what I think was the throttlebody cable, that is located on the driver side of the engine, but it continues to make the noise.
I also thought it might be the air dam vibrating, but that is secure as well.

I haven't done any sort of strut check, but will do it soon, any other ideas?
