96 Sunfire Stalling

I have a 96 sunfire stalling when the car runs for more than an hour. Have changed out my coil pack and also ignition module. Not to mention also replaced the fuel pump. spark plug wires, and spark plugs. Installed a new fuel filter. And still no help. Does anybody out there have any suggestions on what this piece of junk needs to continue to run?

Hey, what motor are you haulin' under the hood?

I'm wondering if your MAP sensor or your IAC sensor took a dump.

Re: 96 Sunfire Stalling

The motor in the sunfire is a 2.2 liter. Transmission is a automatic. I also forgot to mention that i have replaced the iac motor which was missing a screw and causing it to get stuck and also a bunch of build-up on it. Clean the throttle body also of build-up but still have the same problem. Need help as this is my only car before school starts again. Thanks for your input. I'll chk the map sensor and iac sensor. have a haynes manual to chk it out. thanks again.

Re: 96 Sunfire Stalling

Heh, don't worry about it, that's what we're all here for.

Make sure to let us know if it's the map or not. Even something as strange as the IAT, the coils being a little rusty on the electrodes (found that problem in a 2.2L Auto) could even make the engine run a little crappy. But now since the motor's been revealed, now we can get to the problem. lol

Re: 96 Sunfire Stalling

I was gonna ask what motor also, but then I saw "plug wires" and figured it must be the ohv b/c thats the only motor w/wires in 96.

Oh yeah, DUHYE... that's a pure example of how I lack common sense, hahahaha I don't have wires.

Re: 96 Sunfire Stalling

i have checked out the map sensor and iac sensor they are good. Even went to a local junkyard and bought these and these were used to swap when the engine acted up. still the same. getting frustrated with this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks for the previous input from other posts.

Re: 96 Sunfire Stalling

Since it only happens after the car has ran for a while I would suspect some type of electrical malfunction, Maybe when the component heats up enough the circuit opens and it stalls out, I would have guessed coil...but since you already changed that I guess not. Does the car start right back up, or is it just dead when this happens?

Re: 96 Sunfire Stalling

The electrical theory I'd support too. That's what my problem was. I'd start inspecting all secondary electrical equipment to see if you can find something out of whack.

Re: 96 Sunfire Stalling

Thanks for all the input and help. Finally figured it out. when i checked out the radiator hoses. upper radiator hose was really hot and then lower hose was cool to the touch. Changed out thermostat and noticed thermostat installed was 195degrees. oem calls for 180. changed out and cars runs w/ no probs. thanks again for everybodys input.
