Replacing the oil pump
I am in the middle of my head/ring replacement on my 93 Metro. I went ahead & bought a new water & oil pump. I was stupid & ended up ruining the gasket that came with the oil pump because I tried to prime the oil pump by putting oil in the thing. Oil got all over the gasket & ruined it.
I am going to have to make a new gasket ofcourse because you can't order it separate. MY QUESTION IS, IS IT NECESSARY TO RTV THE GASKET? I know this is a stupid question but I am use to SBC & SBFs that have different types of oil pumps. Thanks

Re: Replacing the oil pump
Do Not use RTV between the oil pump and block. a) A dry paper gasket is sufficient, and b) You do not want to run the risk of shooting dry RTV debris into your oiling system.
One time out of all the G10s I've rebuilt, I got a bad oil pump that spun freely off the engine, but bound up when mounted to the block. For your own good, rotate the engine w/o the pump on, then after you mount it and torque it down to make sure you don't get any binding issues. -MechanicMatt

BTW, I read someone filled their engine with 8 quarts of oil, disconnected the ignition & fuel pump & turned the engine over a few times to prime the pump. Any thoughts on that?

Re: Replacing the oil pump
Just pull the coil wire and crank it over until the oil light on the dash goes out. I do that every oil change.
