Thumbs up G8 GT vs Porsche Carrera 911

So last night after doing the mandatory fireworks with friends and family. My old friend TerminalVelocity and I went for a little drive to enjoy the summer night.

After checking out the local scene with all the drunks pooring out of the bars and into the streets. We decided to keep on cruising out and away from the bars, no need to be caught up in all that frass... plus there was too much police activity.

Out on the highway, we were cruising along at roughly 65-70mph on cruise control in the Carpool lane. When a Silver C5 Corvette blew past us at a decently fast clip. I knew better than to chase after it on a night like this. But soon after he passed us, we passed a Highway Patrol officer impounding a Civic along side the freeway. I started to speed up, I thought I may be able to catch back up to the Vette. No luck, he was long gone.

Before I knew it I had a car sitting just to my right side in the adjacent lane. He was in my blind spot sorta so I couldn't tell what it was all I could see was the headlights outside my passenger door window. It looked like he was really close to me like he might of been wandering into my lane.

I put the car in Sport mode and gave her a bit of gas to get ahead... I got ahead roughly 4-5 car lengths and he stayed back. Then he slowly creeped up to me and shadowed my car.

I saw the front of the car and knew it was a Porsche, but I couldn't tell what it was at first. I sped up a bit and he followed. At roughly 75-80 he started to go a bit harder. I followed... and at 90 mph we both seemed to go full tilt at the same time. The transmission kicked down from 6th to 4th and I held his pull. Wound out 4th gear and slipped up into 5th and gained a few feet on him, he seemed to catch up a bit then as I started to get into the higher RPMs of 5th gear he started to fall back slowly. The G8 shifted up into 6th gear and he fell back farther as we broke into the 130mph range.

At just over 130mph he was roughly a car length and some change back from the G8. We shut down and coasted back to legal speeds and he came along side and we exchanged smiles, nods and thumbs ups to each other. Him and his passenger were laughing... maybe because they didn't think a Pontiac would be able to keep up. As they continued on ahead of us that's when I realized that it was a 996 Carrera 911. I thought it was a maybe a Boxter from the headlights at night but I couldn't really get a good look at the car while driving till he got ahead of me.

I was more surprised than they were when I realized it was a 911 and not a Boxter. Didn't know the G8 had the nuts to pull on a German icon... of course if it was a Turbo 911... results would of been drastically different.

A good 4th of July indeed... hope everybody had a fun and safe holiday!

Re: G8 GT vs Porsche Carrera 911

Funny thing was, the video camera was in the back seat. But we weren't looking for races or anything so we didn't even think twice about grabbing it for the drive.

It wasn't till after we raced we were like "Sonofabitch! the camera!!"

Epic fail on our part...

Sweet race!!! How about a video of the G8 speedo from 80-130mph...

Do you have to run high octane or is it ok to not run it and run lower and just not get the full performance.

Re: G8 GT vs Porsche Carrera 911

I'll work on getting the 80-130mph run. It runs on 87 octane just fine, but from what I've read if you run 91 you'll get the full potential of the L76. Which in man speak, it gives you more nuts.

I normally run 89 though. Got some runs in tonight, have them on film. Will edit them tomorrow and post them up soon as possible.

Re: G8 GT vs Porsche Carrera 911

Good kill. This info about taking out a 911 intrigues me.. Now I really wanna see what a G8 can do. If you guys are uh still 'hanging out' this weekend, I would love to roll. The number I gave you is currently unavailable as I left my phone in my friend's car and battery is dead. lol. I'll pm with new contact info later.
Oh and clutch is almost fully broken in now..

Re: G8 GT vs Porsche Carrera 911

You gonna manage to get the vids going tonight, or is that going to have to wait for another day?

I really want to see a higher qaulity version.

Re: G8 GT vs Porsche Carrera 911

I am surprised you pulled on him at that speed. Screw the turbo, I am sure a Carrera S would have handed you a loss.

Re: G8 GT vs Porsche Carrera 911

True, a Carrera S would of put the hurt on us as well. My pull on the base Carrera wasn't fast, but it was steady enough.

I hate you for making me want one of these so bad. I am trying to hold out until the new Acura TL comes out and see what it's like

My guess is heavier, more expensive, and luxorious than the last generation.

Exactly the opposite of what the G8 is.
