Mclaren - The Cars 1964-2008

Has anyone got hold of a copy of the above new book, apparently it covers every model produced by McLaren between 1964 and 2008 and features each and every race car and road car. Reading the authors comments it has taken 3 years to write and all the cars have been photographed specially for the book, this should hopefully mean some new F1 photos.

P.S. I have ordered my copy today so hopefully will have it shortly.

Re: Mclaren - The Cars 1964-2008

Well the description says "covering every model" not necessarily each and every car. There's only 760 photos in the book, and I would assume they tried to detail certain unique items on each car, not just one pic of each.

The book sounds interesting, but I am going to allow a few others to play guinea pig on this one before I spend $150 on it. (EDIT: Appears there is a standard edition at half price for cheapskates like me. ) I suspect the book is largely focused on McLarens that I care little about in comparison to my passion for the F1 and I wonder just how much focus will be given to the ones we cherish. Also the description that each car was "studio shot" often means uninspiring photos on blank backgrounds - maybe these pics will be of high quality, but studio shots are not usually my favorites.

Here's some more detail:

Quote:
McLaren - The Cars 1964-2008

On the evening of Friday June 20, at the Chateau de Prye, a 17th century chateau in La Fermete, a small hamlet 20km from the Magny-Cours circuit, McLaren launched 'McLaren - The Cars 1964-2008', a large-format 304-page hardback book chronicling in exhaustive detail every McLaren ever built.

Each car was studio-photographed by the book's author, William Taylor of Coterie Press (which published the book in association with McLaren), while archive and action photography was supplied by the finest photographers and photographic agencies in the history of the sport.

The foreword was written by Ron Dennis, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the McLaren Group - while Martin Whitmarsh, the McLaren Group's Chief Operating Officer, supplied the postscript.

The book is divided into chapters - one for each decade (or part-decade) of McLaren's existence. Each chapter is introduced by its own foreword, supplied by McLaren glitterati past and present.

As follows:

The 1960s: Emerson Fittipaldi

The 1970s: Niki Lauda

The 1980s: Alain Prost

The 1990s: Mika Hakkinen

The 2000s: Lewis Hamilton

Some highlights from these forewords appear below:

Ron Dennis: "I feel privileged to have worked alongside some truly brilliant people at McLaren these past 28 years, but it would be wrong to single out any of them. Currently, I have 1300 colleagues at McLaren, and each is as crucial as his or her colleague, however long or short his or her service with the company and however senior or junior his or her position within it."

Emerson Fittipaldi: "During the early days of my career in the late 1960s, it would have been my dream to race alongside drivers such as Bruce McLaren, Denny Hulme and Dan Gurney. It happened a few years later, in 1974.

Winning the World Championship that first year with McLaren was much harder than winning my first one in 1972 had been. Clay Regazzoni (Ferrari) and I were equal on points, and side by side on the grid, going into the last race, in the USA. We needed a real team effort, but I always felt that McLaren was better prepared, and that day it really showed."

Niki Lauda: "Other teams are driven by emotion. As long as you perform they love you, but if you don't perform you get sacked. McLaren is the opposite: a high-quality high-tech team, making the best racing cars ever built, and run with Ron's British coolness."

Alain Prost: "Looking back, of my four World Championships, the one with McLaren in 1986 was the toughest and therefore the one I am most proud of. And by then McLaren was my family. After I stopped racing I worked with McLaren again and was involved on the technical side alongside Ron.

It was really a good time for me - but in 1997 I left, but only to try to build my own team in France you must realise. If I have one regret it is that I would have preferred to stay at McLaren, to have that involvement, and to continue working with the team; and to be part of the great team that it is today."

Mika Hakkinen: "When I was with Lotus in 1992-92, for me McLaren was always the number one super-team: it looked good and got fantastic results. My first Grand Prix for McLaren was in Portugal in 1993. The Ford HB engine that McLaren had that year wasn't powerful enough - but everything else at McLaren was unbelievably fantastic.

And so when Mercedes-Benz joined as our engine partner, and said "We've come here and we have to win", that attitude gave me even more confidence. I then saw the development work that was going on at McLaren and at Mercedes-Benz in 1995, 1996 and 1997, so that by 1998 we had a good programme, good mechanics, good designers and a fantastic car: the ultimate machine in every respect. So I knew that the World Championship would finally happen."

Lewis Hamilton: "And through it all, leading and inspiring our team in equal measure, has been Ron: the man who has done more than any other individual to make McLaren what it is today.

It has been, and remains, a privilege to work for him; and I know that the team that Bruce McLaren created more than 40 years ago, and which Ron has guided and nurtured so brilliantly since 1980, will continue to be a tribute to both of them for many years to come. And I'll be aiming to do my bit to make sure it's a fitting tribute."

'McLaren - The Cars 1964-2008' can be purchased from the following websites: www.mclarenshop.com and www.coteriepress.com

It will also be available via the Team Vodafone McLaren Mercedes merchandise areas at the British Grand Prix and the Goodwood Festival of Speed

ISBN: 978 1 902351 32 2 Standard Edition (£39.95)

ISBN: 978 1 902351 33 9 Limited Edition (£69.95)
Anyone know the actual differences between the two additions of the book?

Nevermind - found it: "This Limited Edition is signed and numbered by the author and comes in a special slipcase."

I have gone for the cheaper edition, just in case it's not road-car biased.....

For when the racing gets boring and no overtaking (highly possible) then I can kick back and listen to my favourite tunes, it beats the droning of the commentators trying to think of something to say during the procession / race

Re: Mclaren - The Cars 1964-2008

Yeah - I think I will go ahead and purchase the Standard Edition as well. I am a little disappointed in the format of the book - it appears that every car is covered in a similar fashion to this sample of XP5 below - boring studio shots and all:

There's also a poster available in association with the book. I believe it shows most or all of the cars that are included, and we can see that they have covered all 6 of the basic F1 variants: F1 road car, 95 GTR, F1 LM, 96 GTR, F1 GT & 97 GTR.

An interesting note on the cars used - the 96 GTR appears to be #14R in its original Japan GT livery and race number 61. Can this be true? Also, the green F1 GT makes an appearance as well, so it would seem that McLaren have not let that one get too far from their grasp afterall.

Here's a sample of the poster. I made it clickable for Hi-Res -don't tell Ron.

If you really like it, you should buy one for $19.95.

Re: Mclaren - The Cars 1964-2008

Got the book this morning but only took photo's of the pages, I didn't have time to scan and them crop them

Eriks right- it does look like #14R, so it must have been rebuilt and still kept with Mclaren! as all the other F1's are, logic states it must be there too and to further back this up, there is an appendix at the back of the book that credits the woners of the cars for allowing the book to use them, and the thanks for '14R goes to......Mclaren group.

Perhaps it will be #20R that going to be at Goodwood this year too....

I'm out for the rest of the day so can't really get into it until tomorrow - will let you know what it's like then
