How many miles is a lot for an Eclipse?

My civic basically died and now I need a new car. I've always wanted a turbo Eclipse, but the only ones I can find in my price range have 80-100k miles on them. I know DSMs can be a pain as far as maintenance goes, and it's not like Hondas where 150k is low mileage. I'm looking for something that's going to get me at least 2-3 years of daily driving. Is it stupid to look at an Eclipse?

Re: How many miles is a lot for an Eclipse?

As far as I am concerned, there is no rule of thumb milage wise for DSM's. Turbo to non turbo makes a big difference, but how it was treated and how well it was maintained is what really matters. I would way rather drive a turbo DSM that was well maintained and not beat on all the time with 120k than one that was beat to shit and not maintained with 80k.

I bought a 140k Talon, daily drive it, and until I installed DSMLink, made scary power.

Well of course it's like that with any car. The one I found is a 98 with about 80k. Just wondering is it going to cost me a lot in maintenance at that mileage, because I am trying to keep my costs down in grad school. My car died at a very bad time financially, unfortunately.

If you understand that, then this question is pretty moot. We don't know who drove it, what they did to it, HOW they drove it, etc.

Like any used car, you are taking a chance. These things are easy to work on, at least.

Re: How many miles is a lot for an Eclipse?

chances are though any eclipse will over time cost more than a civic. Parts are more expenisve gas is premium only and with more horsepower more things have higher stress on them which eventually will lead to some type of failure.

Ask the seller if the timing belt/water pump had been replaced in the lifetime he has owned it. That will give you a clear indication of how the car was treated in terms of maintenance. It should have been done atleast once by 80k.

If you can resist modding it, the 4g63 CAN be reliable. If you mod it beyond simple bolt-ons, things tend to go downhill...atleast from what I've seen in the forums from people who have done so. My non-turbo '99 never had any mechanical problems beyond broken door handles and burning a bit of oil.

I have 130K on my 98 GST and have had no major problems "Knock on Wood" other than thinking I blew a headgasket. I still auto X but do all the maintenance fun stuff.

Re: How many miles is a lot for an Eclipse?

Ha bunch of rookies here. My 95 GSX has 161k miles on it ive driven it everyday for the last three years unless I was in the process of putting some parts on it or there was too much snow lol. Its got minor electrical problems but DsMlink says im making about 350hp at the crank and its a perfectly reliable DD

My car(not engine) has 175k. The transmission doesn't grind but it won't shift past 7000RPM.

Ask the seller and see what the response is. If you can test drive the car, check for leaks, noises, and smells. There is a list of things that you cant tell by just seeing the car. Ask if the car has been in any accidents too, that can really put a damper on things.

Re: How many miles is a lot for an Eclipse?

Kinda off topic, but I went to my mechanic shop, I saw a red 95-96 with 420a engine, I came over and look at the car, one of the mechanic came over, and told me the car is " fucking fast" because its stick , I ask him wat year its, he say" its 99 eclipse" I own these car I know what its look like, I ask him because he say " its fucking fast " I told him I own these car and its not fast, unless its other version, gst or gsx, he say " yea "twin turbo" on this car will be more fast .

I just walk away without saying a word and look the miles and it say 201,XXX, very good condition, just something wrong with the engine now, but my point is, ITS GOD DAM 201,XXX MILES !! I take a pix on my phone just for the hell of it . after that day I find out its was 96 rs. very impressive miles.

Re: How many miles is a lot for an Eclipse?

Lets face it after you drive a dsm off the lot where you purchased it, you are pushing it But at that very same moment you drive it off the lot you get this indescribable sensation of pride, fullfillment, attachment and power....well worth it. I love my dsm wouldn't even think about selling even to finance a 1.5 million dollar law suit
