98 Voyageur 3.8L backfires

My 98 Grand Voyageur 3.8L coughs and backfires when I accelerate quickly and when I get up to 50-60 mph. Idles not too bad but its terrible under any load.

Any help appreciated.

Have you checked the fuel pressure with a gauge while driving?

I haven't checked the fuel pressure - that would make sense though.

How would I do that?

Go to this site it should help you:
http://www.autozone.com/shopping/rep...03c5be#hd1-1-2

You can get a fuel pressure testing gauge at any parts store or harborfreight also handles them.

Re: 98 Voyageur 3.8L backfires

I have now replaced the fuel filter and put gas line antifreeze in to eliminate water.

Get this now: It was running fine I floored it, drove it hard, everything and it was good. Then I made a right hand turn and accelerated hard on the turn and it is back to running terrible. Coughs and backfires. This did seem to start at the time when this van was run into on the right front fender (passenger side) but I did not think it would be the cause.

Anyone?
