Welcome to the board, Please do the search before you asking question here. about reliable, its same as any other engine, its depend the owner of the car before if he do maintain the car on time or not.

What are you looking for ? turbo or non turbo kind ? fwd or godly awd ?
I ran my talon tsi awd turbo ( same as GSX ) up to 134k miles stock , it ran good before I wreck.
most common on turbo 2g is crank walk ( search will help you find out, cause I dont want repeat the god dam same thing all over again ).

for non turbo, mostly I saw is blow smoke after 100k miles.

like I say it all depend how preview owner take car of the car, and not beat the shit out off it every day, and late oil change and tune up, other then that if its been well taking care, then these car is last very long time, until you start mod it. any way good luck and welcome to the forum, please alway remember do search before asking question, that will make alot peoples here happy, that include me .

Re: im thinking about buying...

i have owned my dsm since 0ct,05 and it was stock when i bought it, i drove it for 16k miles in about 1 year but after that started modding it and now it drives about 3k a year, you wonder why? because it spends most of the time on jackstands.

Definitely not true on this one. Non turbo models if left unmodded (and of course taken care of as any car) can easily last to 150-200k miles. My car when it hit 100k blew no smoke, burned no oil (just small drips due to MY mistake on the headgasket) and had no real major issues. AND it was modded.

N/Ts are a great reliable car if your just looking for a point A to point B vehicle. For speed, it has some power, but then most will recommend a turbo model. But speed comes money, in maintenance, repairs and upkeep.

Think about it this way, a DSM is only as good as its mechanic. If whoever worked on it did a shitty joab and the driver beat the hell out of it and didnt take proper care of it, chances are it'll be a jackstand queen for much of its life. On the other hand, if you give it a good look over, drive reasonably, and take care of it, then it should be just as good of a car as anything else. I've had almost 2k on my DSM and its started every time, and with the exception of my fuel line incident (which was 100% my fault) its never left me standed. Treat it right and it will treat you right.

I guess unless you are mechanically inclined and patient or have really deep pockets to pay a shop to do it right, I wouldnt get one. Also, make sure you know what you're doing before you start modding, I'm convinced that nearly all of DSM unreliability is due to user error.

Re: im thinking about buying...

If i had the money i would defenitely get an eclipse as a daily driver like everyone else has said they can be very reliable so long as you take care of it. if u wanna go fast buy a turbo model, if u want a goo DD i think a second gen is a reliable and extremely good looking DD option. damn somebody should put that in a brochure or something lol

Like I say early, it all depend on how well the preview owner taking care of it and dont beat the shit out off it every day ( cause they not design to take that kind of abuse, most people that own a none turbo eclipse think they fast, so they beat the shit out off it and neglec about maintaint it, that how the engine worm down and blow smoke, that how I saw second gen around here, at the end it all depend on the owner, if you take care your car it will take care of you. now for me anything under 400whp ( american cars) is slow to me. anything under 300whp for import is slow to me. Im moving up, leave all the hater behind.

I do agree with you on this, 2g is best looking sport cars ( beside evo and wrx ), throw in some 5 poke 18 deep disc, drop about 2 inch, tint window. it catch my eye every time it drove by. I do preferd 2g as a DD cars, shit any 4 banger that save gas will work for me.

Back to the topic, I do say go for it, if you can find a good conditon and most maintaint already done to it ( timing belt ), you are one of the lucky sob, other hand if you find a non turbo 2g eclipse or talon with good condition then go for it too, these car sell fast , I bet you will have no problem selling it if you find a turbo 2g in the future. let me list some of the common thing or should do if you own these car.

These car need attention all the time, check every thing under the hood every week, chang oil on time, use mitsubishi dealer oil filter or napa gold ( wix ).

Change spark plug every time you change oils(10w/30) ( ngk bpr6es ( forgot the gap it been a long time ) and use ngk sparkk plug wire or mitsubishi oem ) if I still remember do this if you anal about your cars

Use pennzoils syncromesh on the tranny ( you could ad a bottle of redline heavy weight shock proof gear oil and the rest is pennzoils )

For awd rear diff use redline heavy weight shock proof gear oils.

if you own a auto, had to use mitsubishi automatic fluid and filter

Door handle broke ( door is too dam heavy )

Crank walk ( 2g turbo, disconnect the clutch starter swith, that the first think you should do. )

If you got the awd version, you have life time replacement on rear differentual , dealer replace twice for under a years.

Boost leak , god I hate to spay down with soap water every month to find out the leak.

Change oil cap seal, do not have to replace the cap just go to dealer and buy another seal and put it on the cap over the old one.

Buy most tune up part from the dealer, filter, timming belt kit, or let the dealer install it, it will empty your wallet, but it will worth it, if you know how to change it, then you save yourself load shit of money for labor, but still use every part of timming belt from the dealer.

for clutch anything over act 2100 will trigger the crank walk bomb. unless you have 6bolt swap, hell i go with act 2600.

Change your pcv valve too.

alway alway check your oil level weekly, add to full mark if it low. and alway alway LET YOUR CAR WARM UP EVERY TIME YOU ABOUT TO DRIVE, morning, or after a long period of time of running. THAT THE KEY TO KEEP THE ENGINE LAST.

im very anal about all my car, that how I did when I still own 2g, over 130k and still dont crank walk. and I did exactly the same to all my car that I own and it treat me really well. Good luck with your decisions .
I did most of the tune up right after I bough it, oil and filter, spark plug and wire, check tranny fluid and rears, check tire, check coolant, brake, funny that I bought most of my tool and oils stuff with me on the plane to fly to chicago and drove 16 hours back. now im look back and dam i was way too crazy for that car.

the road going home , 16 god dam hours driving, lucky gas was under $3
that time

I change tranny fluid and rear right after I got home

unplug the clutch starter switch right after I bought the cars. to start the car without the clutch and prevent from CW ( no nessary for non turbo version )

stock blow of valve ( bov ) is leak, so get aftermarket one, greddy and hks is best for the moneys and had good sound.

the car has 141k miles before I bought it ,and ran perfect it mean it show a good care, and about turn 150k Its end it life.

Maybe AFTER the car was bought the pics would suffice, but not right now. What's with the bills?
