2000 Ranger Overfilling transmission fluid?

Hey everyone,

I have a automatic 2000 Ford Ranger 4.0L V6 (73k miles) which is starting to shift rough going from first to second gear, the other gears are smooth. I heard a local mechanic on the radio this past Sunday mention a product that will help smooth out transmissions "Lucas transmission Fix". I checked my transmission fluid and its 100% full and still a nice reddish color.

What I want to know is if I add this lucas product to my transmission fluid will that harm anything? I have always heard it's not good to overfill transmission fluid, since my transmission fluid is full anyway.

I plan on getting my transmission fluid flushed soon, but with my job right now, I am working 6 days a week and would like to wait till I have a little time off, in about a month or two. But untill I have time to get it flushed, I was going to try this Lucas product.

Re: 2000 Ranger Overfilling transmission fluid?

you dont want to over fill the tranny It can cause problems. If you've got 73k on that tranny and never had a fluid and filter change I would make it a priority sooner than later since your having the first indications of a problem. My personal experience with additives in trannys and moters is that the miracle fixes are'nt much of a miracle. if in fact you have dirty or contaminated fluid your just adding something to it not taking the bad fluid out

Re: 2000 Ranger Overfilling transmission fluid?

I have a '99 Ranger 4.0L with 90K miles. I was advised by a tranny mechanic that unless I have serious problem (which I did not) with my transmission, as a maintenance action, to simply drop the pan, replace the filter and refill. That I did. The flushing procedure I was told is a pressurized method done by a mchaine which could place undue pressure on the various seals in the system. Some Ranger trannys have a cover under the housing which can be removed. Turn the converter until you can remove the plug. To will allow you to drain additional fluids. My Ranger did not have that cover.
