Cruise control

I have a 98 Windstar and the cruise control quit working this week. Last year the same thing happened and I replaced the brake pressure switch which fixed the problem. Today I checked the brake pressure switch and it is fine, I also checked the BOO switch and that is working correctly, there was a blown 20 amp fuse under the dash which I replaced but that did not fix anything. All other systems and accessories are working fine and there are no trouble codes or any driveability problems, so I do not suspect the VSS module. Anyone have an idea where the problem might be?

Re: Cruise control

Welcome notstupid,

If not the VSS, then the Cruise circut is probably compromised.
VSS failure will not stop the car, just cause it to "Shift funny, somtimes"
VSS failure will certainly cause your CC to quit though.

We can help. Please post back with what you find.

Re: Cruise control

I'd highly recommend searching from the Windstar main page for this. Also try Taurus and other Ford's but keep in mind that some models like the Taurus didn't switch over to the fully electronic speedcontrol servo until 96.

It would be helpful to know which fuse you replaced, what it is for. As to potential problem spots besides the VSS, BPS, BOO. Most commonly are problems with the clocksprings, grounding ( does your horn work?), and the cc switches. And the least likely in decreasing likelihood are the speed control servo, the ABS control module and the PCM.

Re: Cruise control

It's taken me a while to get back to you on this, my internet has been down. Anyway, the fuse that was blown is fuse #22 - rear cigar lighter/power plug. I have checked the inputs to the speed control servo and I am sure the clock springs are OK as I get a reading when any of the cruise buttons are pressed. I am going to the local wreckers and getting a speed control servo as this component is easy to get at and replace, I will keep you informed .

Re: Cruise control

I've fixed the problem ! I went to the local wreckers and bought a speed control servo, as soon as I installed it on the van and road tested it I have cruise control again. My total cost was $10. I'm real happy as I use cruise every day and really don't like driving without it, it saves me the worry of getting a speeding ticket.
