700r4 no lockup
well this doesnt pertain to my caprice (its slowly being retired
)but it does pertain to a 700r4 transmission, and i know that you guys are pretty sharp. cant say the same for the camaro forum guys. ... anyway, the entire TCC circuit was removed from my transmission. i have no idea why in the world the previous owner thought this would be a good idea, but you know, some people arent too smart i guess. anyway, as it is, i have to drive around in 3rd or the tranny constantly slips in and out of OD, which is bad. i am considering my options here, but as far as i know, all i have to do is give power to a solenoid (12v i presume) and either wire it to a switch on the dash, or wire it to the shifter. either way, i will have to re wire the entire thing. my other option is to get this: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...376600&FROM=MG that would allow me to bypass the computer and lock the torque converter based solely on vacuum and what i tell it to do. im leaning towards the TCI kit because it will have everything i need, and i have no idea if the solenoid is even good anyway. the TV cable btw is "correctly" adjusted, but i am not sure if the guy who did it did it right. push the button, push the cable all the way in, full throttle, release button. something like that. anyway, sorry for the long post, but im trying to figure out what to do here. |

Re: 700r4 no lockup
Doesn't sound like the TCC to me - it sounds like the dreaded 700R4/4L60 3-4 hunt, which can very easily be repaired by simply removing, and discarding, the spring behind the Modulated Throttle Valve spool valve in the valve body.
When you put it back together, put the spool back in without the spring. The spring is causing the hunt. Just pay attention to the orientation of the valve and make certain it goes back in the way it came out.

Re: 700r4 no lockup
I've got a Painless brand vaccuum lockup kit for my 700r4. I've got it because I eliminated my ECU. I don't know too much about automatics but the shop that rebuilt this trani said one disadvantage to this vaccumm lockup is that it locks up immediately when you go into OD. I could easily install a manual switch, might do that later on if I decide it would help.
Silicon, when I'm in OD and get on it it'll downshift and then shift right back to OD and back to 3rd and back to OD like I think you're describing with the "3-4 hunt". Is there any downsides to removing the spring you mentioned? And should I add one more thing to my reasons for not going back to the same trani shop ever again. I've got a few good reasons already on this list. Wouldn't a good trani shop take that spring out?

Re: 700r4 no lockup
Yes, that's the 3-4 hunt.
I don't know how transmission shops approach this in general, but at the local (used to be Cottman, now it's AAMCO) shop called Karway Transmissions, they pulled this spring out as a part of the rebuild. Any transmission shift kit you get is going to come with instructions that say to pull out the spring and discard. No harm will come with that spring gone, just no more 3-4 hunt.

Re: 700r4 no lockup
ok,well i got a tranny fluid change/ flush and filled it with premium synthetic ATF (the old stuff was burnt after only 500 miles)
turns out the TCC circuit is still intact and fully connected. the guy who built the transmission oughtright lied to me. now i think that he just wants it back so he can fix something he f-ed up in the first place. one thing that is pretty weird though. the transmission does not respond to the throttle. it shifts at the same rpms when you are driving it like a limo as when you floor it. the TV cable is adjusted to spec, slightly on the firmer side for the reason that the bracket is loose and cannot be adjusted as accurately as liked. the guy who did the flush (good mechanic, been doing this stuff since he was 16... hes like 55 now. took it for a drive and said that i needed to take it back to the guy who built it because the whole trans was fucked up. he listed a bunch of stuff that was not right. like it doesnt shift based on throttle position it slips in every gear but first, and thats only because the gearing breaks the $30 tires loose first first. the OD will not stay in gear. there is a moan coming from the trans when it shifts (probably slipping) it forces the engine to shift at 1500 into second, and 2000 into third. shifts get harder, but not any different rpms. ... basically, he gave it a lifespan of around 1500 miles or so before it blows up on me. so. yeah, i just got royally shafted $1700. this guy was supposedly the best around too. :-( |

Re: 700r4 no lockup
Is that your car in your sig GreyGoose006? I remembered that car from American Sports Cars. I got the same hood for my 85 Z-28. I live in KY so I just drove down with the hood off to TN and had them install it and drove home. They use to be called East Coast Customs and before that Corvettes Limited.
