Explore will not start, Was running good
Drove to work fine. Engine did turn over a few revs more than normal when I started it to go to work. Thought nothing of it. After work engine will not start. Has my computer died or what? Hooked it to a machine at a friends garage to get a code, but all it says is error. Please help (1995 model)

Re: Explore will not start, Was running good
Error in that the scan tool is unable to connect, or error as in a diagnostic code? Have you checked the fuses? How will it not start, cranks and cranks but won't start, or doesn't even crank?
Have you verified battery voltage and clean, tight battery cables? Without sufficient voltage, the computer won't work/communicate. Which engine does your Explorer have? -Rod |

Re: Explore will not start, Was running good
Thanks for the reply shorod. The scan tool said unable to "connect"
"error" Have cleaned battery connections and checked all fuses at least three times. The motor is 6 cyl 4.0 1995 explorer. |

Re: Explore will not start, Was running good
Tried self check with OBD1. Check engine light stayed on. Didn't flash after few min. I got a hand held ford computer from friend and hooked it to OBDI and red light stayed on for a few min. Didn't flash. Took SUV to my cuz garage and hooked up high dollar computer first to OBD1 and received no response error. Tried it on OBD2 under steering wheel and said same thing.Fuel pump stays on constantly when key is on. Doesn't shut down after 2-3 sec. Plenty of fuel pressure. Injectors aren't firing. Checked with ohm meter. I have changed ICM, Crank Sensor, Fuel Filter.

Re: Explore will not start, Was running good
By the way. It will turn over fine but seams like its not getting fuel. Took spark plug out and tested it and it was bone dry. (no gas on it.) But has good spark.

Re: Explore will not start, Was running good
Use a noid light and check for power to injectors. Check for a loose computer ground. It should be close to the computer in the left kick panel. Check the relay for the eec iv system. Usually close to the computer otherwise on the drivers side of the engine. Put your finger on it you should feel it click.

Re: Explore will not start, Was running good
Bought a New PCM. Put It In And Still Nothing. Shot Some Ether In It And Started for A Second. Cleared The Codes And Windshield Wipers, Lights Flashing, Doors Locking And Unlocking, And Windshield Washer Fluid Started Spraying. Tried To Start It Again And It Started Up. Running Fine Now, But Still Unsure Of Exactly What The Problem Was. Could It Have Been The PCM? EEC IV Relay Did Click Before I Changed The PCM. Fuel Pump Runs Normal Now, Since I Changed PCM. Thank You For All The Help.

Re: Explore will not start, Was running good
Some Chevys got corrision on the computer connection. You could clean them with electrical cleaner and they would work. I never had this happen on a Ford. Did you plug in a loose wire when working or tighten a ground wire.

Re: Explore will not start, Was running good
With the goofiness of the wipers and washers, I'd be inclined to think the problem may be with the infamous Transmission Range Sensor.

Re: Explore will not start, Was running good
Ooops, I was thinking this was the Taurus forum. I'm not sure the TRS is so "infamous" on the Explorer.

Re: Explore will not start, Was running good
my 96 did the same thing, check your relay for the computer/ecm, mine was making bad contact and would do what you describe. the easiest way to know if it is the relay is that your check engine light will not be on when the key is turned to the on position until the relay is making contact, a can of contact cleaner was all that it took to fix it over a year ago and no more problems
