Miatas

next up

3 semi-real (I suck at real-real) Miatas 1 of each body style

pencil on #1

I took some liberties and it's a little rough around the edges but I feel comfortable with where it's trying to go.

I'm not sure but I think the customer wants it to be blue.

Re: Miatas

Loving the lines, it's gonna look awesome no matter what colour. The far indicator looks slightly out in my eyes. Can't to see the other two, although i'm not a fan of the newest model it'll be good to see you do your thing to it. May i ask, are you slightly tempted to toon one of them? Because i think the latest one tooned would actually look bad-ass. Just my opinion

Re: Miatas

IMO cartoons are much more difficult than semi-real lookin stuff. Cartoons push you creatively. Cartoons are distortions of reality and finding the place where they say and feel what you want is much more expressive and artistically meaningful from that point of view.

I was first published in CARtoons magazine and my roots are there. I can render a ok looking car in a semi real style but it's kind of boring and really doesn't challenge me. The fact that all rules can be broken in a cartoon makes it one of the most intimidating forms of art there is. Try it...when there are no rules...what do you do?

In this case I'm just doing what the client is paying for so I don't have any emotion invested really. I will learn between the lines though.

Re: Miatas

Nice line work, really captures the Miata shape in this angle.

And I'm with you on CAR-tooning, I enjoy the "freedom" of creating
your own exaggerated reality.

Re: Miatas

Lemorris, that is a great semi-real drawing you've done. I love your toon work but I have to echo comments from others - that when you remove alot of that exaggerated toon element, I think your pics are better still. You have a brilliant talent. I think your drawing also shows just what a classically proportioned and timeless design the original Miata/MX-5 was.

Re: Miatas

I think someone sprinkled some crack on this thread.

just kiddin

thanx for the kind words, but I'm a learner just like everyone else. It has been fun to step out of the VW world for a minute and study some other lines.

I finally got a chance to get back on this.

Here's pencil rough on #2

It should be an OK pattern to follow. I'll fix a lot on the computer.

Re: Miatas

Wow they all look great. So which one's gonna be black with the tan interior? I hope the latest model is, i've always related the oldest with a similar shade to british racing green and the 2nd model to a mid range coloured blue, but that's just how i remember them

Re: Miatas

Brilliant, the first looks like a real, rather than semi real.

Re: Miatas

looks like I'm gonna do all the linework on all 3 first then render.

the linework = the suck so I might as well just plow.

Once I get to the hilites it goes faster.

I'm ok with this one

lineart in Illustrator this time
