Engine Rebuild Questions...

I talked to a few local shops and to have my engine rebuilt they want around 1600 labor plus 600-800 for parts.so i think unless someone offers to buy the rolling shell from me i will attempt to rebuild it myself but,i have a few questions first,

I have worked on cars but nothing to this extent before.so,my tool selection is limited...I plan to install new valves, pistons, rings, oil pump, water pump, main and rod bearings, timing belt w/ tensioner, headgasket, arp head bolts, and maybe cams.

What are some of the main or major tools i will need for this job?

Would the Haynes or Chilton manuals have enough information in them to help me through this process?

Re: Engine Rebuild Questions...

yes, but go for chilton, pics are better.
remove engine head and drop oil pan. you can drop pistons/pushrods down through that hole now. with engine head off, you can replace valves, springs, absolutely do replace valve stem seals. hone cylinder bores.
i did this single nadidly on 94 eclipse and 96 galant. total cost was around $500 per case. lots of elbow grease, patience, and kerosine to clean parts.
any quality tool kit in about $100 range from say home depot will do, as husky tools have lifetime. you'll need ramps, jacks, copper brush, cheatpipe (1/2 inch), good pliers, prybar, hammer, mallet, phillips and flathead screwdrivers.
or, get used engine from japan and just drop it in. will be cheaper probably. they are low mileage, certified for it, and we do it around here all the time. no one rebuilds engines here anymore, not worth it. and you can still sell your old engine on say craigslist.
