1998 A C compressor removal info ?

I plan to take my 1998 Astro to a garage, have the freon captured then take it home, install a compressor then take it back to be recharged. My question is on the removal of the compressor.

I see 1 bolt on the top back (standing at radiator) of the compressor that fastens 2 hard lines to the compressor. If I take that bolt out will this release those hard lines? Then all I need to do is take out the bolts that fasten it to the block and unplug the wire harness in front and I should be able to pull it out? I can't see the back of the compressor and I want to make sure I have detached everything before I try to pull it off. Also will I need to remove the oil fill tube or anything else for that matter?

If anyone has removed and/or installed one, any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Scott

Don't forget about the high pressure cut-out switch connector on the rear of the compressor- you can unbolt everything you mentioned- and slip it out far enough to easily unplug- by feel- the HPCO switch connector.

Most likely you will need to transfer this switch to your new compressor- so take that into consideration- you do not want to damage it- if you need to transfer it....

Just by co-incidence- I am doing a '98 Astro tonight- front system only- will be finding and fixing a leak.....

I'd be curious to know what you have to remove as far as the oil fill tube etc to make room. If you get a chance I would appreciate it. Thanks

I don't remove it at all- just twist it out of the way- I don't even remove the doghouse on '96+ "M" vans- all you need to do is remove the air cleaner assembly at the intake snorkel and radiator shroud connections- and set it aside- remove the serpentine belt with your 3/8 drive ratchet wrench is easiest from up above. this is one of the easiest R&R compressors there is- other than high mount GM trucks.....

Is your compressor leaking- as in the infamous "belly leaker"

Re: 1998 A C compressor removal info ?

Good to hear. The oil fill tube has a brace welded to it that bolts to the block. Taking this bolt out should allow me to push it out of the way. This looks necessary to get to the top bolt that secures the hard lines on the compressor. Scott

I don't see any leaks but it squeals terrible when it engages and doesn't blow cold consistently. The bearings are on there way out. I figure draining the system putting on a new compressor and recharging should (I hope) remedy the AC.
