1999 Wolfsberg VW Golf , Auto , AC
couple days ago I came off work and my car needed a boost, battery died, gave it a boost worked fine, went to a buddys place and left car idling for an hour to have it charge up, we left got gas at 7-11 and it started up worked fine, went to a consturction place, walked around and went back car was dead, went to my house got charger and charged the battery, when it started again after a block it cutted out, started back up around 900 rpm, while it was in its process of slowing down to 900 rpm if you were to push on the gas you hear the engine trying to run as if it was burning the gas but not turning the pistons. after few days of having to charge my car and drive it to places I've pin pointed everything I could notice with this problem, Day 1: -Idled to 1,100 rpm -would shut down around 2,000 rpm -if you rev'd it when it idled at 1,100 it would go up to the rev and then when going back to Idle it would go down to 700 or lower and kick back in to 1,100 rpm. -Engine light went on after the end of the day of driving the car. -Poor poor poor acceleration (60Km/hr top speed, 14seconds to get to Top Speed) -Once at 50Km/hr or so when I was driving on smooth road and had everything off to hear the car there was this faint clicking noise, and there was the Slightest-faintest movement of the rpm as if it stopped going for maybe 0.05 of a second every 4 seconds it would click and do it. Day 2: -Same problems as Day 1 Car died again, had a friend come by to boost me, after being connected to his truck for half an hour having my car run I noticed more things - Idle was back to normal, 900rpm - Didn't push the gas to hard to check if it was back to normal but didnt shut down at all on my way back home after the boost and was fine, Day 3: -Same problems as Day 1 but I really started to focus on the clicking noise that was not realy noticable. after Flooring the car and trying to have it floored kinda I discovered that when the engine dies out if I let go of peddle and after 2 seconds if I tap the pedal it'll click back in and start going again, if I delay the tap and wait 3,4 seconds it doesnt click back into driving and starts back up at 900 rpm, this advantage allowed me to get improoved acceleration but point being, "I have a problem" Engine light is still on which is good the engine has finally noticed that its not working. I have had alot of things replaced in the car cause it hasnt had a tune up in 4-5 years, Oil change, plugs, brakes,Master cyclinder ect. a week before the battery incedent someone decided to put more car oil in my car cause they thought it was low when the car just shut off so oil didnt settle and after a weeks worth of driving with to much oil it started to backfire oil out of my air intake. I new the problem right away and drained my oil. |

Re: 1999 Golf cutting out and starting up again while driving.
You stated:
"a week before the battery incedent someone decided to put more car oil in my car cause they thought it was low when the car just shut off so oil didnt settle and after a weeks worth of driving with to much oil it started to backfire oil out of my air intake." Did your overfilling the oil foul the Mass Airflow Sensor? If the MAF gets fouled all sorts of odd performance issues can occur

Yeah Iunno bout that, but I took a turn alittle sharper then usaul and the battery light flickered and the car completly shut off, so I moved around the negative battery post, started the car up and the problem went away, day later the engine light went off, so I assume it was a computer problem -_- I do beleive it woulf of been that, because the air intake backfired oil when I was having that oil issue

Re: 1999 Golf cutting out and starting up again while driving.
Just to let you know most aftermarket batteries terminals are too small and the neg battery cable will not tighten down properly on the battery. Make sure the cable is tightened down properly and if it doesnt you need to buy a VW battery (115.00) or an interstate battery (89.00)
