axle bearings

I have a 03 fx4 with a posi rear end and I think the outer rear axle bearings may be bad.I was wondering if you had to take apart the center differential to remove the axle shafts.I know in a regular open diff you have to just to get the u washer off and on but in a posi I thought the u washers wasn't used there for the axles were bolted to the diff tubes. Can anybody clear this up for me?

Re: axle bearings

I haven't don this year but the had horse shoe clips. The positive traction was harder to get to remove the rear cover and look closely it will be apparent.
They wouldn't thread in because the would unscrew when you backed up.
Some old chryslers had a plate that bolted on by the brake drum in 1969.
