96 XJ having major issues
ok, here we go. it's a 96 cherokee, 2.5, 5 spd, 4x4. it's hard to start, it mildly rough at idle, when you give it gas, it either stalls, or backfires through the tbi depending on how hard you hit it. keep in mind, barely touching it seems to be too much. it stumbles no matter where the rpm's are, and has no power. so far, the map, tps, iac, fuel pump, fuel filter, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, timing chain, battery, and vaccum lines have been changed. and still nothing. I've been told to check the egr but it don't have it. the codes I get from it say the egr, no battery, faulty map sensor, and tps voltage. if I spray throttle body cleaner in it, it runs good. I stop and let it go bak to idle, and it's back doing the same thing. I was told tonight it's either the distributer or computer. another guy said fuel injectors or crank position sensor. what the hell? I'm running out of money. oh, this started gradually and worsened. I never could figure it out.
aside from that, it's got a 6.5" rusty's suspension. sye, custom drive shafts, hks swaybar quick disconnects, terraflex revolver shakles, dual lockers, 4.56 gears, 33X12.50 super swampers, safari rack, brushguard, warn M8000 winch, 4 KC daylighters on the rack, custom rear bumper, snorkle intake, flowmaster, and an optima red top battery! I sank alot of money in this jeep, and I don't regret it. but now, 4 kids later, money is tight. I'm lost and can't afford to bring it to a shop. so I'm on my own trying to fix it. please, help me with this. and thanks in advance for any help. |

Re: 96 XJ having major issues
Start by looking at your voltages at the map sensor and the vac line to it. It sounds like its not getting the right voltage signal to tell the computer know what mixture to have. Did you check the Manifold air tep sensor and wiring? It sounds like its running lean as hell, could be a faulty wire, or sensor. Also before you spend anymore money, get a base engine readout. ie cylinder compression at crank and running. YOu may find that you have a weak cylinder, especially if its something that has gotten worse over time. No amounts of sensors and such will compensate for a bad cylinder.

Re: 96 XJ having major issues
so you don't think it could be the injectors, cps, or ecu? just making sure.... compression on all 4 cyl. was good and within 5psi of each other. if that tells you anything. and, when you get it above 2300 rpm, it runs fine. let it go back to idle and it sucks.

this might not help at all but make sure you have all the vac line hooked up on the trotal body. I had an issue just the opposite I had to give mine gas to keep it running and one of two vac lines on the bottom had pulled lose.
