96 ram 2500 trans

ok i have a couple of trans problems..... keep in mind we do plow snow and are VERY hard on the trucks

96 dodge ram 2500 4x4 reg cab /long bed Cummis 137K miles

the original trans went out at 120k Appox, it was rebuild, and a new touque conver. installed by a trans shop

Ever since , and its been getting worst, the truck seems slow, shifts late, it acts like ur pulling 10,000 lbs all the time, until the locker kicks in and then it works great....its just slow...

before i use to joke that the old set up would idle thru a brick wall, up hill, pulling a trailer....and beating most cars while doing it

now just doing 0-50 feels like for ever......

also when u start it up.....the first shift of the day ,, takes serveral minutes...i know that people say to leave in in neutral for a min after starting, but that doesnt help much and i never had to do that with my original.....so ? any help - also have a 94- see other thread

Smile Re: 96 ram 2500 trans

I have seen this before. The dealer did not even catch it or fix it.

Under the hood, the cable to the transmission has an adjustment clip. I believe the clip has been pulled up and the cable housing is "floating". Push the cable housing "towards the transmission", and push the clip down to lock the cable housing in place.

This is the transmission shift point adjustment. If the Throttle Valve Cable housing is allowed to float, the upshifts will be too soon and the truck will be very gutless.

I re-read the post and thought I would add what follows:

You said that it shifts "Late". That tells me that you are getting a lot of engine RPM before it shifts. If that is the case, the cable housing should be un-clipped and pulled "towards" the throttle and lock it down. (or change the governer sensor) It also could be the governer pressure sensor. Good Luck, I hope this helps.
