Amp and switch help.

I am really new to installing amps and speakers, but I was wondering doesw anyone know how to and what rating of a switch to use to install in order to turn the amp on and off from within my passanger compartment. I have a 400 watt 4-channel amp and it is located in the trunk of my 1994 dodge stealth. Also, does 400Watt 4-channel mean I am only getting 100 watts to each speaker if I hook it up to four speakers?

Re: Amp and switch help.

Most headunits have a control that lets you turn off the subwoofer RCAs, if yours don't, get a switch and wire it into t he remote wire. DO NOT wire it to the power wire despite what some people on this forum say, it is NOT safe. Get a switch that can handle 12-14v and a handful of amps.

Ok...I am probably going to sound stupid for asking this...but...which is the remote wire?

Re: Amp and switch help.

the remote wire is the blue wire with a white stripe coming off of the headunit. The amp should have a terminal place marked remote to conect it to.

Thank you, I got that now. And which end should the fuse go at? closest to the amp or stero?

Re: Amp and switch help.

most people don't fuse it, however it would go on the headunit side since the HU is the one supplying the voltage

Re: Amp and switch help.

And about the watts, do I only get 100 watts going to four speakers? Or do I get 400 watts going to four speakers?

Re: Amp and switch help.

typically size is 100 watts per channel, although that may be max and not RMS. That's a pretty good bit of power fo non-sub speakers.
