Brake lights

My brake lights are staying on when the pedal is pushed. They will turn of sometimes but not all the time. I have replaced the controller under the steering colum 3 times and still no fix. I have checked the grounds for the brake lights clean them and put back and still no fix. Replaced all bulbs and still the same problem. Any help please.

Re: Brake lights

yes the stop light switch, where the brake pedal, and rod going to master cylinder meet up.

Re: Brake lights

First thing.
Get a test light or volt meter and see if the brake light switch is turning on and off right.
Also check for brake pedal sticking or not coming all of the way back.

Re: Brake lights

Check the brake pedal and not sticking. The switch is turning on and off. The lights will only come on once and a while, usually after parking and hitting the brakes.

Re: Brake lights

You have to catch it in the act and test it then.
It sound lihe a brake light sticking but proper testing is in order.
When the brake light stays on check brake light switch and brake pedal for sticking.
Good Luck

Re: Brake lights

You also want to be 100% sure you have the right stop lamp switch. I had a friend with a 94 with the same thing, switch tested good, was properly adjusted, and still same thing. He brought it to the shop, I looked, and it all looked good, but same problem. Then I looked a bit harder and found he was adjusting the switch for the cruise control, that on his 94 the cruise and the stop lamp switch were 2 seperate animals. I am not sure if the newer one is the same. but it wouldn't hurt to look a lil further up on the brake pedal arm to see if there is "another" switch.
