Fuel Tank Meter Sender/Connector

Hello Out There!!

I have a 2001 GMC Sierra and the have a wacky fuel gauge problem. I goes from full to empty intermittenly and the dealer told me that I need to replace the Fuel Tank Meter Sender/Connector on/in the gas tank. The dealer wants over $600.00 for this job. GMPARTS DIRECT List's the part for $94.05. Has anyone replaced this part themself? If so, What are the steps to remove and replace this Fuel Tank Meter?

Hi SGP,
I just did this job on my 2000 Sierra 2500 because I had the gauge problem and also my fuel pump was noisy. On the 2500 the sender and pump are one unit all in the tank. Price on this in Calgary was $310. I looked at this job for a long time before deciding the best way to access the top of the tank was by removing the box rather than dropping the tank.
Removing the box was surprisingly easy. 6 bolts hold it to the frame from underneath. Disconnect the top of the fuel filler tube by removing the 3 small screws inside the fuel door. Make sure to seal off the top of the filler. I used a vinyl glove and elastic band. Disconnect the ground strap that runs from the filler neck to the frame. At the rear of the truck, in front of the bumper, there is a wiring harness splitter block. Disconnect the plug that runs to the bumper at the rear of the block and the main incoming plug at the front of the block. You are now ready to lift the box. I removed the tailgate to lighten the load. 2 fairly strong individuals can lift the box at the wheel wells and move it up and back approx. 18" where it rests perfectly on the bumper and the rear tires. 4 people would obviously make it easier. This leaves the top of the fuel tank completely exposed.
