Change Oil Light continues after change

Does anyone have a clue as to how to reset or turn off the Change oil Light? I just hit 3500 miles and changed the oil last week, but it still flashes on start-up and remains on. I have checked the oil level just to be safe and it reads full (I do not think it is over full).

I called the local dealer, who said that it should go off in a day or two if everythings OK. But he was quick to tell me to make an service appointment for next week (better to get on the calendar now).

Anyone else have a flakey Oil Light? Thank for your ideas!

GM Oil Life System - Resetting
The engine oil life monitor will indicate when to change the engine oil - usually between 5,000 km (3,000 miles) and 16,000 km (10,000 miles) since the last oil change. Under severe conditions, the CHANGE OIL SOON light may be displayed before 5,000 km (3,000 miles). The vehicle must not be driven more than 16,000 km (10,000 miles) or 12 months without an oil change.

The engine oil life monitor will not detect dust in the oil. If the vehicle is driven in a dusty area, be sure to change the oil every 5,000 km (3,000 miles) or sooner if the CHANGE OIL SOON light is displayed.

Reset the oil life monitor when the oil has been changed, use the following procedure.

Turn the ignition key to the RUN position.
Fully push and release the accelerator pedal 3 times within 5 seconds.
If the Chane Oil Soon light flashes, the system is resetting.
Start the vehicle.
The oil life will change to 100%.
If the Change Oil Soon light comes back on, the system has not reset. Repeat the procedure.

Forgot to add that the oil life monitors do not reset themselves.

Yeah I was going to say that the info should have be in your owners manual, but thought it would be just as easy to post it here for others to see as well.

I would think your local GM dealer would have known this also.LOL

Sadly you've hit the bullseye with these two statements. Nobody knows nothin'!

I stopped using Jiffy Lube after they over-filled my last car's engine (blowing all seals - "not their fault").

As for dealerships, well... reading my threads will enlighten you on where the "Like a Rock" statement comes from

John thank you so much for putting those instructions. My used Grand AM GT did not come with an owners manual.... The light has been on for the last three oil changes. The first oil change the oil changer at Wal-Mart reset it but after that no one knew how to do it.....

If you open the drivers door and look at the side of the dash, you will see the fuse box cover. Remove the cover and you will see a red reset button. Turn the ignition key to ON (engine not running) and press the button once, you will see the oil change light flash, press and hold the button untill the light flashes and you hear a beep....Now the syatem is reset.

does the procedure for the suburban is for the new or old models?

200-2004, 1995-1999, etc
