almost wrecked the caprice

Today, when coming home from work, I almost got wrecked.. Came within 1 foot of doing so. Here's the story.

I'm in a right turn lane ready to take a right turn, light is red but traffic is coming, so i can't go.. My light turns green, but guess what, someone in the left turn lane on the road im turning on (but on the "oncoming side"), decides to take a u-turn right where I'm going! Not only did he have a red light, he had a no-u-turn sign.

He came within 1 foot of hitting me. I locked my brakes, he locked his. But it doesn't end there!

He rolls down his window, calling me a "fucking moron who can't drive!!" and honks the horn, revving up his truck, and then threatening to ram me.. I rolled down my window pointing out he had a red light and that no u-turn sign. He then rolled up his window and shifted into drive, and before he could ram me (this guy was serious!) I floored my car hoping the engine don't stall on me.. luckily i peeled out and backfired into his grille (about the funniest thing of the whole moment)..

Well "almost" is much better than wrecked!

Re: almost wrecked the caprice

Your lucky it didn't escalate into something more serious like this road rage incident:http://www.9wsyr.com/news/local/stor...b-2b9cc4dfe7a3
This happened over the weekend near me and the guy is in the hospital not doing too well. Lucky for him one of the witnesses was an off duty state trooper.

I have a Cobra 148 GTL CB radio, and a Panasonic Toughbook CF-28 in my car, and when someone tries to do that, I just pick up the mic and open the lid on the laptop ... they drive off

Re: almost wrecked the caprice

I have it good here, because both the Maricopa County Sherriff's Office, and the Phoenix Police department, still run some boxy Caprice's. Even after 20 years, these cars are still in police service.

I can't think of anything else that makes a better statement about these cars than that.

Re: almost wrecked the caprice

I can see that... here in upstate NY the cars rot away too fast to keep that long. I've owned my truck for only 3 years now, it was nearly rust free when I got it, now the bottoms of the doors are flappin, gas door is rusted through, around the wheel wells are rusted out real bad, huge holes in the cab corners... it used to look good. If the weather forcast calls for an overnight frost, the salt trucks dump piles on the roads (exaggeration). Every once in a great while I will see a yellow boxy Caprice taxi still in service, usually from NYC though.

evildragon, you actually got lucky twice... one for missing him, and twice for getting away before he rammed you. I hate people like that. Here a local story was just recently over the news, two women followed another woman off the expressway, got out of thier car at the stoplight on the exit ramp and beat the crap out of the lady in the front, killing her unborn baby because they claim she cut them off. They defended themselves be saying "we didn't know she was pregnant."

Re: almost wrecked the caprice

Ya gots to be careful out there, especially with the HOT weather which brings out the best in people. I tell my son who is almost 20, that you have to recognize dangerous situations and avoid them whenever possible. Who knows who is drunk or drugged up or just plain nuts out there?

Re: almost wrecked the caprice

didn't you know that here in Florida a light has to be red for 10 seconds before you have to stop at it .

I have stopped at red lights and then had the person behind me take off and fly around me after we had both come to a complete stop. FL is crazy. I have to drive a semi in this nuthouse.

Re: almost wrecked the caprice

wow.
after reading this thread, im glad i dont live in florida.
one thing though...
is it just me, or do caprices seem to have exceptional brakes for their size and weight.
never have i come across a situation where i felt that i nearly couldnt stop in time.
sometimes when nobody is around, i test the full force braking, but usually dont end up pressing as hard as i can because i am stopped already lol.
i think the key is to make it so that the braking is done as smoothly as possible.
if you slam your foot down as hard as you can, they will lock, but if you start with firm pressure and build as the car transfers weight, you can do some pretty good stops.

jsut an observation.

i have 225 tires and slightly upgraded front disks. the pads are "performance pads" and the rotors are like .05" bigger lol... like that makes a difference.
