1994 Rodeo Rough Idle and CEL/Fuel metering system error code

Hello all, I recently inherited this vehicle as a gift and have a few questions. From what I was told a new motor was put in the vehicle about 5 years ago and it is the 4 cylinder 2.6 l. The problem Im having is it idles very low and almost stalls. After warming up and cruising on the highway the check engine light comes on perodicaly. The vehicle will become slugish until I release the accelarator and then the CEL light will go off and the vehicle will drive fine until it comes on again. Seems to do this under load also.

I have shorted the aldl connector and am getting code 44 which according to the diagnostic trouble codes is a problem with the fuel metering system. Any ideas where I should begin? Thanks all.

you might just need a routine tuneup (spark plugs, cap&rotor). Or it may need a sensor. It sounds like the problem is electronic. Try the tune up first. Even run some injector cleaner through it. How dirty is the air filter?
