98 SL motor/transaxle mounts?

During low speed in town driving, my 98 SL tracks straight but when I get on a 2 lane highway and get up to 55, the car seems like it wants to squirm or carb walk on even the smallest bump on the road but only for an instance. Could this be due to a bad motor or transaxle mount?

check the suspension control arms for play due to the rubber bushing falling apart.

Re: 98 SL motor/transaxle mounts?

1 things for sure and that is it needs new tires. They're not bald but tread is thin enough that it wants to hydroplane real easy on a wet road. I was taking a sweeping turn at about 45 in the rain, the car started to hydroplane just a bit and at that instant a deer was in front of me so I tapped the brakes just a bit while at the same time I hit a slight bump which made the suspension do it's crab walk thing. All happened simutaneously and me and the saturn almost ended up in the ditch with a deer for a hood ornament. I missed the deer and stayed clear of the ditch but it sure got my attention. Checking out the tires a bit closer I found it has P170's up front and P175's in the back and to top it all off, the drivers rear is a Douglas, the other rear is a Goodyear and the 2 up front are Dunlops.

Honestly i would start by getting a new set of tires, front and back, or at the very least, have the front match and have the back match. Then from there see if this problem still exists.

It's my sons car so he'll be the one taking the responsibility to pay for them but it definitely will be getting a full set of matching tires, not just the same brand but same size as well and maybe that will fix it. I checked out the undercarriage about a week ago and from a visual standpoint, it looked good especially considering it has over 120k miles.

Re: 98 SL motor/transaxle mounts?

We nabbed a set of 15x6 aluminum rims off an SC2 in the junkyard to replace the 14" steel rims, put a brand new set of tires on them and the wishy washy feeling has all but completely vanished. What little is still there is due to sloppy inner tie rod ends and front sway bar bushings that of course will be replaced. Even though they're factory rims, my 17 year old thinks they're so much cooler than the steel rims.

Re: 98 SL motor/transaxle mounts?

haha well i must agree. I have alloy rims on my '97 and '02, and steel on the '98 and '01. Alloy looks sooo much better

Glad the issue dissapeared
