Seat belt light
I found some info reguarding how the light itself is wired through the chime box. i found some info reguarding a late 80s camaro but it seems like it might be about the same... anyways heres what i found about it:
- With buzzer module completely removed, there will be no buzz but also no dummy lights. i.e service engine soon or infl rest. - buzzer module must be in harness for dummy lights to function correctly. - to disable buzzer ONLY but keep module in harness so dummy lights work correctly: 1. take out buzzer module 2. open up buzzer module by suppressing the clips that fasten the unit together. 3. remove circuit board from case. 4. on the upper section of the module casing, remove white plastic ring, metal circular piece, and metal support brace that connects circuit board to speaker. 5. reassemble the buzzer module and plug it back into harness 6. enjoy not having that annoying buzz anymore in your camaro! That will also disable all the buzzers (key in ignition, lights on, etc). To disable just the seatbelt buzzer, unplug the connector next to the driver's seat and under the plastic cover for the seatbelt take up reel. I think it sends a ground to the light and buzzer when there is no tension on the seatbelt. i know its just a seatbelt light but im the type who HAS to know just how it functions reguarless how small it is, someone said the seatbelt sensor on the 83 caprice is located in the seat itself or also in the windup part of the belt, i dunno though cause it will come on sometimes and other times it wont, sometimes it will even come on while im driving. any input?

Re: Seat belt light
Mine does not chime with the seatbelt, but that could have something to do with me disabling the wire to the seatbelt some years back.

Re: Seat belt light
yeah mine does sometimes when it wants, im still stumped on how that light is powered though, i havent come across any type of wire or swich around the seat or seatbelt though. while i was reading around about seatbelt lights someone has a NOS system, and they set it so that the "Fasten belts" light comes on when the nos is ready lol

Re: Seat belt light
In my case, there is a wire that feeds a switch that is imbedded in the seatbelt buckle. This wire has a quick disconnect. That's what I did.

Re: Seat belt light
hmm sounds like thats something a 9C1 would just have. there are two sets of wires however under the drivers seat that have 2 different wiring harnesess so i know they dont connect together, one has two prongs and the other has three if i remember, i think they may have something to do with the motor or switch in the seat, which has never worked
correction: i do have a little switch inside the buckle

Re: Seat belt light
My '87 only has the "ding ding ding" when the lights are on or the door is open with the key in the off position.
A little fact from the '87 dealer brochure: '87 introduced the "ding ding ding" as a more pleasant update to the buzzer. The only indicator that my seatbelt isn't on is the dummy light in the cluster. I unplugged the lightbulb from it and it's a done deal. Don't know if this helps but (for '87) the wire going into the back of the instrument cluster that goes to that "fasten seatbelts" light is one of the two yellow wires.

Re: Seat belt light
My '84 Caprice had the ding ding ding, my '88 Chevy van had the annoying buzz, my '89 GMC truck has a solid ding or beep, and the '85 Caprice I had also had the solid ding or beep. I don't know what constitued which car got which sound. In my '84 Caprice the only this the chime box does anymore is ding ding ding when the lights are left on. It did though at one point have the same distinct solid ding or beep my truck has only when the key was left in the ignition with the door open. All other sounds were the ding ding ding. The way it's all mixed up like this in different vehicles gives me ideas to screw with someone... 18 wheeler style air horn for lights left on, duck quacking for key in the ignition, and the Austin Powers carphone sound for the seatbelts.

Re: Seat belt light
haha, yeah like i went to turn the key today and it made the little ding (pause) ding (pause) ding for the seatbelt, it does it at random times though so i know my car is obvously equipped to do that, and of course the ding ding when the lights are on too.

Re: Seat belt light
If anyones interested here is what the chime module looks like, you can see the actual speaker (the black round thing) and the whole box plugs in next to the fuses, i only know that the single grey wire is for the dings when you leave the headlights on
