Cool 89 chevy 1500 Exaust Question

a little history on what happen, First i was driving to my neghbors house in the winter and i got stuck.... then while i was trying to dig myself out... i left my truck running and eventually something was plugged inside the exaust system because the enitre system was glowing Red.... afterwards.. the beads shot out of the convertor... and basically i couldnt even push my throttle enough to psyically move the truck.... now i am able to drive this truck with the convertor on it but im only getting roughly 5-8 mpg and it has no muffler.. (due to melting) ... I have no smog restrictions in my town because it is country land..... and now finally my question.....

If i replaced my entire exhaust system with this exhaust system... would i even need my convertor?
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

i've heard that some trucks require enough backpressure or else they wouldnt run right?
but this system is made for this year of truck and the motor size... so.. it leaves me wandering...

Any help would be great... but if thats the case.. then i will just buy another convertor.. and put a good performance muffler back on it.....

If you have any specific questions for me.. Just Ask... Thank You!

Re: 89 chevy 1500 Fuel Problem

The system you listed is a cat back system so it is designed to replace everything behind the cat. Even if you do not have emission testing in your area, it is still against the law to remove it.

This converter is a good replacement http://store.summitracing.com/partde...15+4294924930+

Hmm well it does look nice, but the price
(gotta remember im not made of money) But definatley thank you for your post... i think i'll take your advise.. just replace the cat.. and the muffler..

I just wanted to ask someone.. cause.. i dont want to buy 200$ in parts.. and then have the same problem.. ( Bad Gas Milage )
Seriously 5-8 mpg.. with even with a 350.. is horrible! :-(
$4.09 per gallon..

I found these though.. you think they would be a good alternative to replace with?

(Catalytic Convertor)

(Muffler)

(Muffler)

Which ever you think is best.. i just want something that sounds good.. (BEEFY) And is somewhat a reasonable price..

But this is also going under a truck with a tbi - 350 5.7 liter, and for the tbi to work right .. air restriction is a must ( so i been told ) in order for fuel flow to function right..

Anyways hit me back.. and thank you for your reply..

Re: 89 chevy 1500 Fuel Problem

Perhaps the best thing to do is figure out why you are only getting 5-8 MPG. My 90 K1500 gets 12-15 MPG (original engine and trans). You could have a bad cat, bad 02 or something else.

Do you know anyone with a scan tool that can see the sensor values and fuel trims?

Well my uncle does have a way to run a diagnosic on the whole truck.. ( Plugs in right under the dash, Driver Side ) havent tried that yet.. i didnt think that dumping too much gas would throw a code.... but i guess i could always give that a try...

Thanks for the suggestion.... i'll go try that out tomorrow...

After i Do that, i'll let yah know the readings..

Talk to yah l8r
