Revell Ferrari 612 Scaglietti

WHAT A KIT! Poor fitment, poor alignment, poor everything....but yet i liked it! Front wheels in the kit are massive undersized, so i bought another kit and fit the rear wheels to the front
I also tried to sand down the hood to make it fit....well, at least i gave my best effort~

Re: Revell Ferrari 612 Scaglietti

concidering it's a revell kit it looks absolutely sharp! Paint and finish is great! that the wheels don't really align as they should is forgiven, therefore it's revell...

Poor fitment? Well, try Revellīs Mercedes 600S or their F-2000, and you will call this Ferrari "perfect". It may be not as good as a Tamiya kit but itīs also less expensive by half. Youīre a model-builder at last, donīt you?

Anyways, great model, nice paint and very fine pictures!

Hi dickson,

i've seen much of your ferrari works, the overall result is very encouraging. i have a small piece of advice to give if you don't mind.

i see some paint orange peel effect in some of your models, may i ask what you use & how you do the paintjob? how many layers of gloss you usually apply? do you polish rub after drying?

from the pics, i suspect your gloss coat is not thick enough to support any polish rubbing...maybe the next model you lay a few more gloss layer & rub it evenly, the result will be even better...especially in the way you picture your models, man you do a pro photographer job!!!

thankx & happy modeling!

Of course i don't mind! i appreciate all the comments so i can make improvement~~
For all of my models, i either use spraycan or airbrush for coloring.
As for this ferrari, i used air brush. For some reason, the paint layers are quite soft, so soft that if you applied too much pressure handling it, it will leaves a fingerprint....so i have a hard time trying to polish it with compound. There are some that i left it to dry for at least 2 months...but the result is still the same --- paint is soft. is it the ratio of acrylic paint and thinner that i used? or is it the moisture? Thanks!!

Re: Revell Ferrari 612 Scaglietti

Which brand of acrylic clear did you use? Back in the 80's, when majority of my models where built, I used Tamiya clear (from the bottle), and wasn't very satisfied with it. The same problems you just mentioned, seemed that they never cured. Nowadays, when I shifted to 2K clear, the finish is rock hard within hours, and can do the polishing within a couple of days.

Re: Revell Ferrari 612 Scaglietti

i have never heard or use some 2K clear in this part of the world...
but if you said it dries up in hours & rock hard, i reckon you're taking about lacquer...those paint used in real cars.

i can see what the two of you saying that the paint is 'soft'. i guess you use tamiya can spray for the paint job right? maybe you have overspray the body & not enough time for it to 100% dry. try laying many layers instead of one thick shot, the paintwork will 'fuse more smoothly & uniform.

yes, this will take alot of time but it's better this way than to strip damage paintwork later. also, during each 20-30 minutes between each thin layers you can do 'adjustments'...like dust, uneven paintwork or corners etc.

i only use can spray when i'm glossing up the finish color & smoothen by 2000 grit sandpaper. 1st thin gloss then 2 wet ones will be enough for me to rub down...

for airbrushing, i don't have a formula how to mix...by rule as long as the mixture is milky & pressure ser between 15-20 PSI is good enough for me.

i hope you can find something useful here

thankx!

Yep, Mipa brand of automotive lacquer. The same kind of stuff that Hiroboy sells, only that the price is lower, but you have to buy half litres. It is mixed just prior painting with hardener, and cures to dust-proof within minutes. Smells awfull, but who cares?
