Starting with new timing belt
After reading this thread by JLEMOND http://forums.delphiforums.com/n/mb/...og&msg=3502.1&, "IF EVERYTHING LOOKS OK , START THE ENG AND SEE IF IT RUNS OK , IT SHOULD START RIGHT UP , NOW YOU CAN PUT ALL THE PARTS BACK ON THE FRONT OF THE ENG , TIGHTEN THE LOWER CRANK PULLEY BOLT TO ABOUT 115 FT LBS OF TORQUE AND YOU SHOULD BE IN GOOD SHAPE JERRY"
I just want to make sure...So after i put my plugs back in, I can start my 97 Passport SOHC, without the tb covers, alt/fan/p. steering belts, and coolant? If so, I know it would only be for a minute to make sure everything is okay.. If indeed this is the case, its a great tip which will save my garage from being flooded with tears if i wind up screwing something up!Thanks mucho!

Yep. I do it every time I replace a t-belt.

Isn't that first startup exciting!! Good luck!
I did something simialr yesterday as I changed the 3 accessory belts at the front of the engine. Put the first one on and started it to make sure it was aligned and tensioned correctly before moving to the fan and a/c belt. Then put the fan and a/c belt on and started it before finishing with the power steering belt.

Just so I understand too, because this sounds like a great trick - the reason this works is because everything driven by the serpentine belt isn't needed for actual engine operation? I mean, the spark would be reliant on the battery only, with the alternator not producing any power, so it could only be run for a short time.
Is this the correct understanding? Thanks
