something else...possibly

so back in december i just had great fortune with my cars(sarcasm). neways, i was going up the driveway and the clutch burned out in the stealth, i think.

i think about it now though and these few things just hit me.

1) there's a clicking under the engine when not on the clutch, it goes away when u press it.

2) i can put the car in gear without pressing the clutch, and leave it there while the car is on.

3) the damage on the front end is an eyesore

4) is this possibly not the clutch but some other mechanical failure...possibly cheaper to(i know a lot to ask of a 3/s tt)?

my expierence with the 944 clutch having gone, i wasnt able to get the car in gear without it being pressed, and when it did go, the gearbox wasn't letting me any of the gears. i do know that everything is still linked up b/c of the connecting rod issue with the 944. now granted a 944 and a stealth are 2 completely different cars, but some things r the same nomatter what car it is.

any help would be much appreciated

Re: something else...possibly

If it was just your clutch being worn out, you wouldn't be able to just put it in gear with the engine on. It also wouldn't just go from going up a driveway, it would be a lot more gradual.

Sounds as if your clutch is stuck disengaged. Does the car move when you put it in gear?

It's 2008! Wheres the video clip of the ticking?

But yeah, definitely sounds like some other mechanical failure than the clutch wearing out. More like something broke and is jamming something.

Re: something else...possibly

(1) sounds like the throw-out bearing. Mine has been doing that since i bought it 3 years ago. I havn't done anything about it becasue i've been waiting for the clutch to shit the bed. still runs fine though (knock on wood). I would describe mine as more of a clatter than a clicking...but perhaps mine is in the advanced stages of crapping out.

Re: something else...possibly

the video...the only digital camera i have only records in film mode for like 10 seconds, then it dies.

when its in gear, the car wont move, even if you use the clutch to put it in and gradually gas and release the clutch, it wont move...unless it's flintstone powered. the clutch was slipping since the day i bought it. i've had it for 2yrs now and really it's only been insured for maybe 6 months, due to costs or issues with it.

i noticed it really starting to slip(even more so) coming up the local highway. i went from 5th to 4th while slowing to 40mph. a puff of smoke came out the pipes, dont recall the color, between blue and grey though. when i went back into the gas the rpm shot to like 3000rpm, but no real response. i proceeded to go up a hill(no other way to my house) and by the time i got to the top i was in 2nd at like 5000rpm, at like 10mph. i neutraled till the driveway. when i got there popped it in first and went up the driveway(my myspace has a pic of the driveway) it burned out at the top. the one thing i did see that scared me more than a clutch, grey smoke came out from under the hood. my dad pushed it with his olds into the spot where it's been sitting since then...surprisingly the tires still have air in em. i do notice that if i give it a lil rev in neatral a lovely clutch smell appears and if the motor runs for a while 20-30mins i get the same smell.

the motor itself is fine, it wasnt blown or overrevved at any point. the car still turns and fires and sound great(sadly cant move it though). the saddest part, the car shines when washed and waxed better than any other car in the driveway with the same treatment.

is there anyway that if i put it on jackstands i could look at something related to see if its broken/disconnected?

whats a throw out bearing? and about how much...for the part(s)?

the reason the stealth wouldnt move if it was in gear or neutral, it's parked in a manor in the driveway that unless u pushed it or the clutch engaged, it wont move with a few people pushing it

would a clutch master cyl seem like the issue?

Re: something else...possibly

Definately fried the clutch. Same thing happened to my car and I had a new clutch put in just a few days ago. My mechanic said the clutch was absolute dogshit when he pulled it apart.

If you buy a clutch kit, the throwout bearing usually comes with.

The smoke you described was most likely the clutch.

Re: something else...possibly

Based on those details, yeah it sounds like your clutch is gone. Time to pull the tranny off.
