2004 F150 rear end whining

I have a 2004 F150 new body. 5.4L 3:73 limited slip rear end. I have had the ring and pinion changed about 2 1/2 yrs. ago. It has been having a bad whine in the rear end for a while now. The whine happens at low or high speeds, usually on acceleration or normal driving. If I am costing or let my foot off of the gas the whining goes away. Could this be a ring and pinion problem again? Has anyone else had this problem?

My 02 F150 has same issue. I think very common on these if people notice. I had the whole rear end fixed at like 20k now 120k and whining like crazy. The shop guys say that they haven't had any fly apart yet so I am gambling.

Check the pinion nut to see that its still tight. Sometimes if a nut is reused, not properly torqued, it will back off causing the pinion depth and backlash to be off causing whine. I didnt look to see if there are any TSB`s on this but you might want to check with the dealer and or the people that rebuilt it for you. Unless you guys are hauling extremely heavy loads or driving under extreme conditions, theres no reason why either one of these trucks should have needed differential repair, specially an 02 with 20k on it unless there was a defect.

Yep, like bubbles said, that is a 100k rear end is quiet as a mouse. But, on lift you hear no noise is that foot print is off. Whoever set the rear end up is now it walks off the center pad or more or less was close to the pad and now after a few years she has patterned way off the center of the ring.

So, more or less, you pull that pumpkin cover off, look at the ring to pinion seat tag marks and if that is not in the center, then there is you noise at the ring/pin.

It may be cheaper to buy another unit at the scrapyard. They usually give you 30 days so you know if its whining or not.

is that a automatic? and now days they use tranny fluid. it couldn't be that someone might to put gear oil instead of tranny fluid? or the whining is a axle bearing there good at that.look under at each ride rear drums if you have them one side on backing plate is dark or wet theres your bearing or if really really wet seals leaking and burnt bearing...
