Lighter Socket power....

I have 2 different things plugged into the lighter power sources in my 2000 Navigator, one is the GPS and one is my satellite radio. The problem is when I turn my car off, the navigator keeps them powered when I would rather that they go off so I don't have to continually turn them on and off when entering and exiting the vehicle. Is there anything I can do to the truck to achieve this? Thanks for any help.

Re: Lighter Socket power....

Don't you have a 12v "lighter type" socket near the passenger's feet? I believe that one is switched the way you want it....

In my little commuter car, I needed extra outlets.. So I got a few of these sockets with wire's included, cut off the plug and hard wired them into my fusebox at a switched 20A circuit.. works great.

Re: Lighter Socket power....

They are both plugged in, one in the regular lighter socket and one in the thing you are talking about but both stay on at all times. Are you saying it can be switched or you thought it was already like that? Thanks again.

Re: Lighter Socket power....

Sorry to hear that.. mine (the lower one) is switched.

You would need to do some re-wiring to make it switched in your case. If you're going to have to re-wire stuff, you might find it more efficient to just add new outlets.

You do know, yeah I'm sure you do... if you went to an installer for that Sat radio they would do exactly what I'm describing.. well, not exactly.. they'll use the same components and splice into a switched wire anywhere under the dash. They normally tap into a radio hot wire with a cheap crimp on splicer:
