onboard computer not responding

Here is the problem:
I had my engine light on for last few days. I went to autozone to read the code. Autozone ppl said they were not able to read the code and it could be a problem with one of the fuse. On there suggestion I opened the inboard and under the dash fuse box to check if a fuse is broken. I pulled out few of them but all looked okay. Finally i put them all in place and properly closed both the fuse boxes. When i turned on my car, the engine light was gone! When I took my car for "state inspection", they said that they are not able to communicate with the onboard computer. My cars audio system and key less entry system also stoped working. Is there any way to fix this problem at home? Or do I have to take it to the car mechanic??? All help appreciated.

ok hopefully its is a fuse problem.. But sounds like the ECM and the BCM are not communicating... I would do a good search in the fuse box and check out all relays as well.. Also the ones that control the audio and keyless entry.. Something makes me think something may have shorted out.. To do a reset of the ECM and BCM you can remove neg. battery cable for about 30 sec to see what happens.. After you put the cable back on the ECM and BCM should reset..

resolved the issue long back. For the purpose of record:
I pulled out all the fuse myself. Tried to inspect them visually, everything looked okay. Then I replaced all of them and closed the box and hood etc; only to realize that all my car parts controlled by the onboard computer are not working any longer: keyless entry, srs check, engine light check, radio etc etc. Scared I took the car to the expert, he changed probably only one fuse and charged me around 70 bucks.

Later some one informed that it is not easy to detect a broken fuse visually. You need to put the +ve -ve ends in some kind of tester to get results...

hope the car manufacturers start making things less complicated.
