2000 Kia Sportage - Timing Belt Problem?

OK, I HAVE A 2000 SPORTAGE THAT I'VE HAD FOR ABOUT 4 YEARS... BOUGHT IT USED AND LOVE IT.
IN MARCH OF LAST YEAR (2007) HAD THE TIMING BELT/WATER PUMP/TENSIONERS ALL REPLACED - BECAUSE THE SPORTAGE WAS JUST REACHED OVER 100000 MILES. ALL WENT WELL WITH THAT... OR AT LEAST IT SEEMED TO...
10 MONTHS LATER THE "HOLD" LIGHT ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL STARTED FLASHING... WITHIN JUST A FEW DAYS THE TIMING BELT BROKE. STOPPED DEAD IN ITS TRACKS. FORTUNATELY IT BROKE AS I WAS PULLING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY.
PAID TO HAVE ANOTHER TIMING BELT TO BE PUT IN BY SAME MECHANIC...
THAT WAS ON JAN. 21... THE BROKEN BELT WAS A CLEAN BREAK, NOT WORN, JUST SNAPPED. LIKE A RUBBERBAND BREAK...
NOW, HERE IT IS... 4 MONTHS LATER AND MY ENGINE "HOLD LIGHT" IS FLASHING AND MY CAR IS SOUNDING LIKE IT DID RIGHT BEFORE THE TIMING BELT BROKE.
I'VE NEVER HAD MAJOR TROUBLE WITH THIS VEHICLE, UNTIL NOW. ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRCIATED, ESPECIALLY IS IF YOU KNOW ABOUGT KIAS.

DOES ANY ONE HAVE ANY IDEAS ON WHAT COULD BE CAUSING THIS?????
THE DAY AFTER I GOT MY CAR BACK IN JANUARY, I LEFT FOR FT. CARSON, CO AND SHE DID FINE, EVEN DRIVING BACK HOME IN 850+ MILES OF SN0W STORMS.
THANKS AND HOPE TO HEAR SOMETHING SOON.

...I cannot see any relation with the flashing HOLD light and the T-belt...It would be interesting to read the codes ...
NOw why a 10 month belt would break is somewhat puzzling...any possibility that the tensioner was set too tight?...or there was a flaw in the belt itself.

Re: 2000 Kia Sportage - Timing Belt Problem?

The Hold flashing light tells a transmission code was sent for storage to the computer, most of the time, the code is about the engine rpm or car speed not matching the gear as read from the transmission encoder.

like:
P1624 - MIL request from TCM (Transmission Control Unit) to engine computer. ...means that the TCM detected an error (which is the next code) and tells the engine computer to flash the Hold light and turn on the check engine light.
P0507 - Idle control much higher than expected. It basically means that the engine computer is seeing an idle speed much higher than it expects and it can't lower it to spec. (that was reported, but not sure if related to blinking hold)
P1795 - 4 wheel drive low switch signal malfunction. For some reason the TCM "thinks" you are in 4L. This would explain if it isn't shifting into O/D. (applies to 4WD vehicles only)

Can be caused by faulty tranmission encoder or wiring problem. Not an operational issue. Only way to know for sure is reading the codes but if you have no other symptoms, it can be a one time event that does not repeat.

Several reports of such codes also mentioned "evap codes"...although it is not clear or in fact not relevant that the flashing hold has a relation to that. In any case, check gas cap tight and hoses to fuel tank in engine compartment and top of fuel tank ...open trap under right read seat.
