Squareback toon

I decided that Squareback sketch had potential so I'm gonna work it up.

Re: Squareback toon

Cool effect of exaggerating the rear camber by showing the tilt in both tires!

Did you use the light table to go from the pen doodle to the pencil or just free-hand it out again?
The overall look/shape of both is so close and it's hard for me to get a second version to be
that close. I usually start playing around with some part and can end up with some
big changes to the design when I finish a second doodle.

Re: Squareback toon

light table

I actually did it twice. The first time I started to make my exaggerations and try to feel it out of the sketch.

I scanned that rough and in Photoshop I made the rear tire bigger and adjusted it's angle and stuff and then printed it out.

Then I transferred that image on to a clean sheet of paper, once again taking liberties and feeling it out as I went.

That is the image you see above.

The light table (I have a custom made old school huge box and we have 2 of the snall production types here as well.) is an invaluable tool. You can transfer and transfer and work out bugs before you start rendering wheter by hand or on a computer. I highly recommend them for every artist. It's as important a tool as an eraser.

Re: Squareback toon

Thanks for the run-down of your process.

I've got a small art store type light box, but have gotten lazy
and just use the scanned image/vector program process to simulate a light box.
Should maybe go back to doing more overlaying by hand instead of just scanning in the thumbnail.

Those wheels look great. Are they base off an old EMPI wheel design?
Back in my younger days, all the air cooled Bug and 'Vair guys seem to have lots of EMPI parts.

Re: Squareback toon

the wheels are BRMs. I think that's the company. Empi makes a pretty popular 8 spoke but I think BRM is a separate company. It's a pretty popular 5 lug wheel that a lot of VWs run. My froend also has redline inserts so it's pretty neat lookin.
