Engine OUT
Hi folks, I bought a Windstar 96 3.0l, but there is a problem with the crankshaft. There is 0,6mm space between the bearing and crankshaft at 2 cylinders so as I gues the engine is dead so far. I'm going to get a better one, but my question is>
Is it possible to get the engine out and leave the trans. in the car? Is it possible to rise the engine up the car, or it must be lowered from the car? Thanks a lot, regards MarPac |

Re: Engine OUT
Hallo, is there anybody please, who knows if it is necessary when taking the engine off the car to take it with gearbox together or if is's possible to leave the trany inside the car? And which way to get it off, bottom or up? Up will be nice for me ...
Thanks a lot This might save me hard work taking it together opcorn:

Re: Engine OUT
Sent an E-mail don't know if you received it. Rent a Gantry, disconnect everything from the subframe. Lift the body off the subframe and roll the car backwards away from the subframe. You will have access to the engine tranny and frontend. This is the time to replace anything that is difficult to get at with the car assembled. Sould take less than one day out and one day in. Take you time setting everything up so you don't have to do it twice. Don't try jacking the body up, it's dangerous ask me how I know.
Good luck |

Re: Engine OUT
I'm pretty sure the engine can be removed "upward" ... but it would not be my choice of the way to do it. Like "Lukepin", I prefer to drop the sub-frame. But I do jack the body up ... just an inch or two ... and pull the engine and tranny, mounted on subframe, out thru the right-front wheel well area.
These photos show a wee bit of the method I used: . http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=890799 |

Re: Engine OUT
Thanks for the details posted in yuor link, seems, that lowering the subframe gives me the oportunity to put all the stuff away easily, but once the engine is down, I have to put it away, so the car must be up? Or unmount the front of the car?

Re: Engine OUT
I put jack stands under the raised car, on both sides, after the wheels were a couple of inchs off of the ground. Then removed the wheels, removed and hung the brake calipers, removed the strut assemblies and pulled the axles. The radiator was also removed. The ac compressor was removed and hung out of the way. All the loose/easy stuff: battery, air cleaner, alt, ps, intakes, exhaust manifolds, etc ... were removed. This all opened up the engine box quite a bit for lowering the subframe. The heads were also removed to shortened the engine height before removing.

Re: Engine OUT
Yes, thanks a lot, I'm going to do it exactly the same way now, because I have no lift to put the engine out upwards.
I'll put the subframe on a little troly and get it away easily. MarPac. |

Re: Engine OUT
One little precaution: The very first step would be to point the front wheels "exactly" forward, and then using large tie-wraps or rope, tie the steering wheel to the drivers seat frame. This is to prevent the steering wheel from being mislocated while the steering column and the steering rack are separated.
When you raised the subframe back into the car, place the rack in center position and you will be able to attach the column back to it ... having everything "in place". Otherwise, you will have a chance to damage the "clock spring" under the steering wheel ... more cost and confusion! |

Re: Engine OUT
I also removed the engine and tranny with the subframe. I kept the van level and I used an engine to lower the sub-frame onto the crane legs with boards across. I jacked the van up using jacks on both sides and cribbing with cinder blocks and wood on the frame rails until I was high enough to move it out the right side. I left the radiator in the vehicle with a 1/8 inch sheet fit in place to protect the radiator. I left the exhaust Y-pipe on too until the subframe assembly was out.
I definitely needed the crane to move the engine/tranny/subframe around and raise everything high enough to work everying. Highly reccomend using one. |
