It definately sounds like a passlock issue. I don't know how to properly reset it but I do know if you turn the key to the on position but don't start the car and leave it there for ten minutes it should start. Sounds stupid but it works!

Re: 2001 pontiac grand am wont start

It's 11 minutes 3x .

ps- it could also be the ignition switch and not the lock cylinder causing this.

Re: 2001 pontiac grand am wont start

i've tried 10 min, 11, 12 min, 13 min, 14 min, and 15, min, 3x each and still no result, also i have replaced the ingnition lock cylinder and switch i just bought the whole assembly, and i still get the same result, my problem is i cant even get it running to get it to a shop to have it checked out, i also have a service engine soon and service vehicle soon light on, so i bought a scan tool, and it produces no codes...... any idea's? also i bought a new ecu and i am curious as to how to program the vin to it? or can i just install it? i have heard i need to reprogram it but i'm not sure.

Re: 2001 pontiac grand am wont start

I would assume you have already checked that it is also getting spark.. or not ?..

Here is the relearn just in case thier's any confusion....

Quote:
Security relearn procedure:

1) Attempt to start the car by turning the key to the Start/Run Position.
2) Observe that the vehicle fails to start and that the security light is illuminated.
3) Release key to the 'ON/Accessory' Position. (DO NOT turn key to the 'off' position.)
4) Allow the vehicle to sit with the key in the 'ON/Accessory' Position for no less than 11 minutes.
5) Turn key to off position and allow the vehicle to remain in the 'OFF' position for no less than 30 seconds.
6) Repeat #1 - #5 for 3 cycles.
7) On 4th attempt, car should start.

NOTE : Since this is a fairly long procedure, I would limit all electrical sources, such as disconnecting headlights, to prevent discharge of battery.

NOTE 2 : It is SAFE to wait LONGER than the allotted time, but it is not safe to wait less time. I.e. 12 minutes instead of 11 minutes should be safe; however, waiting 10 minutes instead of 11 minutes is not safe.

Properly executed, this procedure should take approximately 35 minutes to complete
Was the ignition switch/lock cylinder actualy bad , or did you just replace it ??

Most generic type scan tools will only read "P" codes which are generic specific.
The only way to reprogram another PCM would be with a GM tech II (or greater software), usualy means the dealershits.... you or I could not program the pcm.

Thier are GM "U" Network OBD Trouble Codes, and thier are "B" Body OBD Trouble Codes to mention a few.

Hope that helps.

Re: 2001 pontiac grand am wont start

well i dont know if the lock cylinder was bad or not but i replaced it because the ten min thing didn't work so i figured it was bad, and replaced it, because i tried 10 min all the way up to 15 3x each and nothing worked for me. also i was using a snap on solus pro elite scan tool, and also there is a spark i can tell when the key is turned to the on position that the fuel pump is working and that the car is getting it's inital gas for starting but the security system is not allowing it to get any more gas so the car stalls after a few seconds, i've tested the fuel pump, regulator, and injectors and everything checks out ok also i have tried this relearn procedure and no result....... i think i'm about ready to give up also i dont have a flashing security light it is a solid on and has been for about 2 years but i never had a problem starting the car until i got stuck at school one day with it and it hasn't worked since

Re: 2001 pontiac grand am wont start

If your security light is on constant then it sounds like you'll need to take it to the stealership.
Those snap on scanner are nice but no where near the capabilities of the GM tools.

Hopefully its something minor, Good Luck !

Re: 2001 pontiac grand am wont start

i have replaced all the bcm, ecm, and pcm, along with inition switch and lock cyclinder, still same result's, could this possibly be a (tps) throtle postion sensor? i had problems with the car before it broke down that included high idle's around 3500rpm all the way to 5500rpm

Well the high idle certainly sounds like the TPS. Don't think it will do anything to fix your original problem!
